U Street has a reputation as the hip and urban, yet sophisticated neighborhood preferred by everyone from college students to business professionals. It’s one of Washington D.C.’s most historic and diverse communities, encompassed by luxury rentals.
The community has a sweet balance of commercial and residential buildings adjacent to nightlife, art galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. Locals can’t get enough of the DC half-smoke covered in chili dish at Ben’s Chili Bowl.
Music is pretty big here in U Street with jazz clubs and rock n’ roll halls on every corner. The Lincoln Theatre is an excellent place to see a show, whether you’re into jazz, soul, or country! Residents enjoy the convenience of the U Street Washington Metro station, so they can travel to neighboring communities with ease.

Property Ratings at The Ellington
The apartment and everyone working here are wonderful. The amenities are amazing, and U Street is a super fun place to live in your early 20s! We love living here.
The Ellington is a great apartment complex! The management is organized and kind. The apartment is in well-kept condition and any problems are fixed quickly. The only issue is that it's very loud on U Street, so summertime can prove more difficult to sleep.
Everyone at the Ellington has been so friendly and welcoming, and the leasing and maintenance offices have made the move-in process ridiculously easy. Highly recommend!
It was great to move in and it was easy to get items from the concierge and move them to my apartment. They were also helping in explaining the area and where to go for a meal
We’ve had a great experience at The Ellington! The front desk, leasing office, and maintenance is kind and quick to help. We love the walkable location and safety within the building. It’s very noisy on weekends, but the perfect location for going out.
I’m a new tenant. They made my move-in logistics really easy. The apartment is very nice. They are very responsive to tenant demands. Great experience so far!
The apartment building is kept clean, it’s dog friendly and it has great staff who take the time to get to know you. I am happy with this move and my dog is evening happier to have more friends to play with on our roof.
Great building with great staff. I feel safe here and it is also very welcoming. The apartments are really nice and new. Everyone in the building has been friendly and it has made my move to DC much easier!
Everyone at the Ellington is so kind and considerate. Neighbors say hi to each other. Staff makes an effort to get to know you and is so beyond helpful with every issue you have come up. I feel so welcomed already

The only issue is the extreme noise in the alley way adjacent to the building. I know it's outside of your control, but hopefully can report noise complaints, as there are RV crews that loiter around and blast music late into the evening.
The Ellington building itself is a great building with renovated units and a large rooftop patio area that has a designated for area. 4 grills on the roof make it great for the summer and the gym is well equipped and large. Main point for moving out of the building is the area (U St) which is no fault of the management companies. Area is very lively and loud on Friday and Saturday nights with crime increasing over the last year. Fall 2021 multiple bullets came into the buildings lobby and someone had been shot right outside front door. People ride ATVs and motorcycles late at night on weekends and they are very loud. Management company has been slow to communicate with residents about incidents even though there is a concierge located on site 24/7. Case in point is that when there was bullets shot into the building, the first contact from management happened 18+ hours later. They stated this was due to gathering facts but one would surmise that the concierge could accurately state right away that bullets had entered the building and to stay away. Another example is that the fire alarm went off recently due to contractors setting it off and the building was evacuated. It was due to a mechanical problem and there was no fire. This was not made aware for residents for multiple hours during a work day as the management was "gathering facts" to give out. One could again surmise that it was clear pretty quickly that there was no fire and residents not impacted by the sprinklers going off could return home but management did not make that immediate notification but rather took the time to first call contractors to come in and help clean up water instead of letting people know their home was not on fire. The building has a standard no rental clause in the lease where you are not allowed to rent out your apartment on sites such as AirBNB. However, the building management itself has decided to post vacant units on AirBNB. This was told to us by the building's social media accounts rather than an email to residents informing us of this and has yet to inform residents if the building will be conducting background checks on any individuals using the AirBNBs similar to the ones done when applying to live in the building.
I have lived here for a year now and while the building itself is great and has tons of amenities, I am not renewing my lease due to the surrounding area. While it is known that U St is lively, there has been an increase in crime that has made me uncomfortable and has prompted me to leave. While the management company and building cannot control crime, they can control how it is relayed to residents. I.e. a shooting occurred outside of the building with multiple bullets entering into the front door area and lobby, meanwhile residents were not made aware until the next day rather than notifying in the moment to stay away from the front door There have been shootings and armed robberies both on the street and area. I would have stayed if the building was located in a safer, quieter area. Communication is generally lacking. I.e. fire alarm went off (not a drill) and the building did not communicate to residents whether it was safe to return to the building until four hours later.
Location is extremely noisy, but to no fault of the apartment building
great building, great events, great staff!
Great building, friendly staff, amazing location
GRADE A location! Spacious units, at least mine is..... the full sun roof top and other special amenities are all top reasons to recommend. I haven't experienced living there full time quite yet (next week!), but I'm prepared to fall in love...
I think they are severely understaffed. It takes too long to complete a request, which is fair given that they are only two people. We need more maintenance people here.
yes
Friendly professionals and quick response, but no resolution or follow-up.
To be frank, I would have highly recommended this apartment and community before Lincoln came on board, but due to the issues I faced, I would say I recommend it given some improvements that have happened in the last 3 months.
I would recommend it for the location and friendly staff. Being in a newly renovated unit, I would have expected less issues with the washer/ dryer.
Staff was very friendly and attentive to needs. However, unfortunately all my requests were not met.
Would - amenities, monthly breakfast on the first of the month, little events held by the old manager Bradley to help foster community, Alfred included, workout classes, clean Wouldn'??t - you guys got rid of all of the old front desk staff who we knew well and were very nice and responsive, boo!!!
I have really enjoyed living at the Ellington. Its the perfect location and has amazing amenities. I think it has been a tough couple of months though with the ownership transition as we now have new employees and are not sure who to reach out to with questions. We also no longer have a portal to submit maintenance requests, pay our rent online, or reserve spaces in the building. Additionally, I think a lot of the residents miss having our monthly breakfasts sponsored by the building and fun events on the roof!
It is an excellent location and I do feel safe in this building, but it is extremely loud and not as high quality since the change in management.
I like the apartment a lot, and it's in a great location. My main reason for not scoring higher is because we've just gone through a transition to the new property management company and so can't respond positive or negative.
I love the Ellington. I just have noticed some changes in the changeover from one property management company to another, so I am a little apprehensive, but eager to find out more.
The location, building, and apartments are nice. The kinks with new management will hopefully be worked out soon. I do NOT understand why there are not cushions on the roof, and why 2/3 of the grills don't work on the roof. To me, that is unacceptable.
It's too expensive. I didn't like the way our lease renewal was handled.
I would recommend it for those who want a managed building experience that's operational and not to be bother. I would not recommend it for people who are looking for community or friends. I'd recommend more community social events for people in the building to get to know each other.
Overall, location is great and the rent is reasonable for the amenities.
This is a great building if you want easy access to the metro (less than a full block from the U St. Green Line stop), a fantastic and expansive rooftop, and other amenities such as a gym and party room. Other good features include a knowledgeable and responsive maintenance staff and a concierge to sign for all packages. On the downside, apartments facing U street can be a bit down on the weekends, if you keep your window open, but the glass is pretty thick and most street noise is drowned out if you close the window. Also the building charges an extra few dollars a month for every conceivable utility, including two different fees for water (regular and waste), $5 for garbage, and a $3.25 administrative fee for the courtesy of billing for the other fees.
The Ellington is a great apartment building. Door staff is extremely friendly. Roof provides an amazing view of DC and was recently redone.
The Ellington is a beautiful building with a 24-hour front desk, gym, free exercise classes, and occasionally free breakfast. Its location on U street cannot be beat. The only issue is that the area can be dangerous at night so you must be vigilant.
I've lived at the Ellington for three years now, first in an apartment facing U Street, and now in an apartment facing the back of the building. I will say that apartments facing U street can get a bit noisy, but the back side of the building (facing V street) is very quiet. The rent is decent for the area and is a bit cheaper compared to the other (and newer) buildings in the neighborhood. You're really paying for location here, as you can't beat the location to the metro, restaurants, bars, etc. The gym (including fitness classes) and roof are excellent amenities.
No real complaints about the building. The roof deck is the best part. My unit faces U st so if you don't like noise, this could be a problem as it tends to get very loud especially on weekend nights. Bozzuto is notoriously strict with not allowing a number of dog breeds so make sure you check their list if you're moving in with your pooch. It's a great location and you actually get more space for your money compared to some of the newer buildings that have been built in the last few years in the neighborhood.
I definitely recommend the Ellington. Located less than a block from the metro and on the 14th st corridor, it's amazing how many options there are right around the building. We've been here for 2 years in the smallest sized unit and have still lived comfortably. Everyone who works here is very friendly and helpful. The amenities are fantastic - Rooftop with grills and an amazing view of the city The gym that is kept clean and generally not crowded A party room for hosting large groups of guests Our only complaints are that our windows haven't been cleaned in 2 years and the fire alarm goes off occasionally in the middle of the night. Overall, it's been a great place to live!
