Nestled between Schenley Park and Frick Park in the city's East End, Squirrel Hill is considered one of Pittsburgh's most popular neighborhoods. Although the city divides the neighborhood into Squirrel Hill North and Squirrel Hill South, locals tend to treat the area as one sprawling entity.
Squirrel Hill South's stability remains part of its appeal, as do its rolling hills, walkable business district on Murray Avenue, excellent schools, and tranquil streets. With homes ranging from mid-rise apartments to ornate mansions, rental options are available for a wide variety of different tastes and budgets.
Squirrel Hill South's historic charm combined with an easy-going attitude makes it a great place to live. Proximity to multiple universities makes the community an ideal location for students, faculty, and staff. Carnegie Mellon University and Chatham University sit in Squirrel Hill North, and to the west lies the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland.

Thank you! We are glad we were able to remedy the situation. We appreciate you being a continued resident!
I lived here for 2 years during my training at UPMC. They were the best apartment homes I found in the city with so much space for the price (compared to other apartment complexes)!! Everything is also upgraded which is a huge perk in Pittsburgh. The location near near Frick Park and the Waterfront was great as if I needed a quick dinner there were lots of options within 5 minutes...you also can't beat the shops and grocery stores nearby as well. The grounds were always up kept and the management and maintenance workers were great to work with and responded quickly. I always felt safe in the area which is very important in my decision to rent at The Gateway. I would recommend The Gateway at Summerset to anyone looking for an apartment home in Pittsburgh!!
After living in our home for 45 years, my husband and I decided it was time to surrender being property owners. We began our search by visiting numerous rentals. None fulfilled our wish list. As it happened, an article in the Sunday Post Gazette featured THE GATEWAY at SUMMERSET. We came to see the property that same day. We signed a lease on the spot and put our home up for sale. We have been residents for 4 years and I cannot think of one negative thing to report. This has been an excellent choice. The grounds are well maintained. There is green space every where. Frick and Schenely Park are proximal to this complex. The pool is heated, sparkling clean with ample lounges and shaded spaces. There is a grill/patio area with picnic table for the residents to use. Public transportation is a stone throw from our front door. Pittsburgh is 10 minutes via the parkway. Add to that nearby Oakland, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill for shopping, entertainment and numerous eateries. Management has been prompt with any issue in maintenance. I give you a recent example. Our air conditioner was not operating on July 4th. The projected temperature was to be in the high 80s. I called the emergency line at 9 am to report the problem. Help was here at 9:30 am and my AC was up and running at 9:45 am. I could go on and on about the joy of living here. Don't hesitate...you won't regret it.
If I wasn't buying a house, I'd live here forever! Great location close to shopping, entertainment and a perfect place for those who enjoy the outdoors - sits right on the park. Attentive maintenance and superior management who always makes sure the place looks great. I'll really miss living here. I encourage anyone to visit who's looking for a new apartment!
My wife and I lived here for 3 years with our dog and cat while we saved for a house. When we moved out we received a bill for $1200! The current Property Manager told me that the cat peed everywhere and they were charging me to replace the floors in the whole apartment. I explained to the Property Manager that I know what cat pee smells like and my cat did not pee everywhere. I'd warn anyone that has pets to beware of this community because they will send you a bill when you move out. Pro tip: Let the bill go to collections and you can negotiate the bill lower. The Property Manager wouldn't budge on the $1200 so I told her to let it go to collections. Collections called and I negotiated the amount down to $875. Clearly Gateway at Summerset inflated the closing bill. Other issues with this community: they ordered mulch one year that was infested with millipedes. Needless to say, the entire bottom floor of the community was covered in millipedes. My wife and I counted the number of millipedes we removed one day (50!). Residents had to beg the former Property Manager to get a pest control person to come quarterly. Another issue is the new CVS that was built next to the community. Prior to the CVS, the community was quiet and peaceful. After CVS was built, the residents started reporting car break ins. One night I witnessed a car full of teenage girls pulling into the parking lot and vomiting and urinating. Beware selecting a unit close to the CVS and make sure you lock your car! If you're from out of town and moving here it may be nice to know that this used to be a slag pile for a steel mill. You can also smell coke plant fumes from a local mill in Braddock. If you're concerned about your health and breathing in this smelly air, I'd think twice about moving here.

Thank you to you and your wife for taking the time to review your experience at the Gateway; we genuinely appreciate feedback as our goal and commitment is to provide an outstanding experience for all of our residents. The Gateway prides itself as a particularly pet-friendly community, however residents are responsible for any damage caused by their pet. If our professional opinion is such that the carpet would need replaced to ensure it was fresh for the next resident, we would replace it to make certain the new residents also moved into a clean and sanitary home. We take great pride in delivering a pristine and well maintained apartment home to all of our new residents, and then maintain that spirit into the continuous beautification of our wonderfully landscaped community and our exemplary maintenance response. We apologize for the unforeseen and very unfortunate circumstance with the mulch. After such event we implemented monthly pest prevention services and have not experienced pest issues since that contaminated batch of mulch. Also, thank you very much for bringing the issue to our attention involving the incidents in the CVS parking lot. We were unaware of such activity and will certainly notify CVS as well as encourage any residents that may witness any illegal activity to report it directly to the police and Gateway management. For those moving to the Pittsburgh area, and for those who already live here know that Pittsburgh is a great city that prides itself on history and rejuvenation! We are extremely proud to be a beautiful new community that overlooks Pittsburgh and it's amazing river views, to be surrounded by the peaceful and gorgeous Frick Park and to share the community with the affluent Summerset Neighborhood! Again, thank you for your valued residency and your feedback. We wish you the best of luck in your new home. Thank you – The Gateway Team
My fiance and I have lived here for about eight months now, and it has been the best apartment rental experience we've ever had. The apartment itself is extremely nice, and the location is great. I cannot say enough good things about the management. They care about their residents and are more than accommodating and friendly. Maintenance is prompt and very nice as well. Nothing but good things to say about out experience here!
Well maintained apartment community. No significant problems with rowdy neighbors and surrounding area is very safe and walkable. Apartment management has been responsive when we have needed assistance. Only complaints are some cheaper fixtures and details around apartment (e.g. cheap flooring and carpeting, issues with dishwasher due to installation issue)
