There's a secret in Washington, DC: the tiny, trendy neighborhood of Ivy City. If you haven't heard of it, you aren't alone -- this up-and-coming neighborhood was mostly industrial and largely forgotten for decades. But with a history dating back to the 1870s and charming row houses lining the streets, the whispers about Ivy City are growing louder. Luxury apartments in historic warehouses add elegance to the neighborhood, and bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues add a layer of energy and excitement.
Ivy City's unique name (there isn't an abundance of ivy and it isn't a city) dates back to Civil War-era poet Thomas Seaton Donoho. He named his house Ivy Hall and wrote a book of poems called "Ivywall" in 1860. Donoho dubbed the rural area he lived in "Ivy City" and the name stuck. Ivy City is located on the northeast side of Gallaudet University, extending along New York Avenue from Mt. Olivet Road to the intersection of New York Avenue with West Virginia Avenue.

Good looking space, nice high ceilings, large windows… all for a decent price. Outside these items.. this building and its management are below average. You get what you pay for though in the city. Management: Front office can be rude / unprofessional at times. They are not welcoming to say the least.. one could argue this to be subjective, lease and find out lol. Maintenance: Severely understaffed – this leads to a load of problems you can imagine. The halls are dirty and prone to the already rodent infested building. Dog poop and pee is everywhere and there is no penalty for not picking up after you pet. So we just have to look out our windows into the courtyard / common areas and deal with this. Parking: Parking is horrible, street parking tickets are 300$ for not paying the meter “normally a 30$ ticket. But because management is so money hungry they classify it as private property, which makes no sense. Btw security is calling ticket enforcement. Security doest do anything else but that… they should be called parking security. Safety: Dangerous area.. they are robbing right in front of the building and management wont send any notifications to alert residents because they don’t want to lose out on money.

Hi there, We're genuinely sorry to learn that your recent experience fell short of both your expectations and our standards. In response to your feedback, we've made adjustments to our office team. We believe these changes will contribute to improving our service and ensuring a more positive experience for you in the future. Best regards, Hecht Team
The Hecht is nice space with lost of history, character, and long term leases. Outside of the aesthetic and price, everything else is below average. The building is huge and is understaffed with maintenance people, so halls, common areas, and outside are dirty. Management is horrible, from communication to simply having a warm environment is non existence, everyone working looks like they hate their job. There is poop and pee everywhere. Outside is dangerous, they do now have security, but security will give you a 250$ ticket so be careful. a number of people have been robbed outside the apartment. If price is your driving factor maybe consider, outside of that look somewhere else.

The architecture at Hetch is what first drew me in to this apartment. Not soon after was I enveloped in a professional courteous run institution, with a very strong sense of community. I love it here.

Hi there - 100% satisfaction is our goal! Great to see Hecht Warehouse gave you such a great experience.
The Hecht is a beautiful space filled with history and character. The apartment aesthetic is exactly what you would picture when googling 'industrial loft apartments.' I really wanted to love my apartment. Unfortunately, the poor communication between maintenance, staff, and residents has made my experience particularly unfavorable. Getting management to sign my lease took several months, which only occurred after approaching staff after multiple times.

Bullet points for easy following: -$1200 in fees that weren’t disclosed until after paying the application fee and deposit -10 unanswered emails -called multiple times a day for a week before I finally got to speak to someone (they don’t have a voicemail -my number had been left for the manager 3 times. Still haven’t received a call Avoid anything managed by Greystar.

Bad management. They literally won’t fix anything and charge you for everything! I’m a long term resident. I promise you will regret it the moment after you sign your lease

I'm so bummed I have to resort to publicly whining, but I genuinely want people to know what they're getting into if they move in here. First of all, the building aesthetic and vibe is wonderful. The concierge staff are fantastic and do a really good job. However, it doesn't make up for just how terrible the leasing office is. I moved out a few weeks ago and my roommate is moving out this weekend. We've been trying for a month to get answers to our questions about security deposit and final walkthrough and have not been able to get timely responses. I have called several times and by the time I get through, people tell me "we'll call you back with answers" and then they don't. I was charged for a full month of rent after moving out and have been trying to get in touch with someone for two weeks to help me fix that with no luck. Not to mention my car being broken into 3 times and the lackluster response from the building. The nice parts of the building just don't make up for the rest of the annoyances of living here. It's really mind boggling how a building with this much potential could be so inept at basic communication. We lasted a year here before it became clear things weren't going to improve. Be prepared for frustration if you try living here.

The concierge and Errica in the leasing office were A1. Professional and accommodating especially during my move in process. The building is unique and I love showing off all the cool features and amenities to my guest. I love to have people over and entertain and this is the perfect building to do it.

Awww, thanks friend! We really appreciate your kind words about Hecht Warehouse!
Highly recommend. Everyone is really nice. The walls are a little thin, but I love the area, and all of the natural light. It's my first apartment and I'm very happy.
The whole team here is remarkable!! I never have any real problems! Leasing is amazing! Rare type of management!! Words cannot express the love and care that the Staff give each resident here daily!! From the Top down its always taken care of with love and compassion! In life thats rare!
I just moved in but the staff is very friendly. It seems like many folks who live here are friendly too. I do wish we had visitor parking and that the walls were a little thicker, but I love my place. Happy to be here.
The Hecht experience is definitely one of the best in the city to experience.
Hecht Warehouse has been professional, accommodating, and friendly to us ever since day one. Troy made the application and move-in a breeze. The concierge staff is very convenient and has made sure we get all our packages safely and within a timely matter. Even though we just moved in and needed maintenance on our washing machine, the maintenance guy, Gary, has been very helpful and responsive. We appreciate how friendly everyone has been here at Hecht.
The staff at Hecht Warehouse Apartments always make me feel at home. Any issues with my apartment or the building are addressed promptly and all work is finished with professionalism and courtesy.
Overall, it's great. There are always issues when living in large buildings, but the staff are extremely responsive and seem to truly care about the residents' happiness.
Hecht Warehouse is by far my favorite apartment community ever! The staff and people living in the community are friendly. I love the amenities (coffee/tea, gym, many seating areas, outdoor spaces)
The administration at Hecht Warehouse Apartments has always been the most professional and courteous to us, since arriving in 2016. Maintenance responds promptly and complete their work
If you are looking for a creative and unique living experience in DC, Hecht Warehouse living is for you. Open space, high ceilings along with high impact warehouse design elements surround and inspire you.
As one of the original tenants, I've witnessed hands on and experienced changes and growth in the community and administration. The staff, both when I arrived and current have always gone out of their way to take care of our needs and make us feel at home.
I love the Hecht Warehouse community. I have never leaved in a friendlier community, both staff and community occupants. Plus, I love the infrastructure and the 7th floor apartments with french doors, wall of windows and small balconies are "amazing!"
Very Cool Living Space and the Coolest People Work Here.
This is by far the worst living situation I have ever experienced. Ivy City has potential as a neighborhood...in 5-10 years. Now might be a good time to buy property for the purpose of sitting on it and waiting, but it is NOT a good time to drain your funds keeping up with lofty rent payments to live in a community with zero resources. You would be better off living in the suburbs if you're thinking the price looks attractive. The commute would be identical, the price would be lower, you would likely be safer. The irony of Hecht is that it sits atop the Nike store, but whereas the Nike slogan is "Just Do It" I fully believe that the most appropriate slogan for Hecht would be "Just Don't". Skip this building, do anything better with your life.
