West Ashley sits within the city of Charleston and is west of the Ashley River, hence its name, and is the birthplace of Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Darius Rucker. Lined with mossy oaks, the Ashley and Stono Rivers border West Ashley, creating the breathtaking scenery for which Charleston is known. West Ashley residents enjoy close proximity to the area's only indoor mall, the Citadel Mall, and a large number of big-box stores.
Situated seven miles due west of Downtown Charleston, residents can plan on a 15- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic, to take in all downtown has to offer. Nearby Interstate 526, which feeds directly into Charleston’s Interstate Highway 26, gives residents a fast and easy route in and out of area. Mid- to late-1900s ranch-style homes characterize the housing in outer West Ashley, but neighborhoods built in the 2000s also sprinkle the area.

I made the decision to relocate to the Charleston area and decided on The Heyward site unseen until I got here on Dec. 14th and couldn't be happier. The leasing office answered so many of my questions from out of state and put my mind at ease that everything was going to work out just fine..... and it did. Michaela and Jack were so helpful the whole time leading up to me arriving and after I arrived. It's a beautiful complex...the pictures don't do it justice. I'm so happy with my choice to be a tenant at The Heyward.

I absolutely love this apartment complex! The property is beautifully maintained—everything is so clean and well-kept. The clubhouse is fantastic, with a gym and a pool that’s perfect for relaxing. The apartments themselves are incredibly spacious and have plenty of storage, which is such a rare find. Plus, having a garage for extra storage is such a bonus! What really sets this place apart, though, is the management. Michaela is amazing! She is always so kind, approachable, and willing to go the extra mile to help residents. It’s clear she truly cares about making this a great place to live. I couldn’t recommend this complex more highly!

Happy I ended up picking this place to live from moving from Florida. Just renewed my lease here again. Have never had an issue, if I put a maintenance request, it gets fixed the next day. These apartments are very quiet, and peaceful. My favorite about them is the dog park and scenic walk behind the apartments. If you have pups, they will love it here. I love that the Heyward has events once a month in that brings us all together. I also love the food trucks that come by. I have nothing but good things to say about the staff, apartment & community.

I researched apartments in West Ashley last summer for three months. The Heyward was One of the last ones I looked at and immediately knew it was my choice my choice. The management/community/Amenities are outstanding. My apartment Is in a great location and I’m so comfortable here that I renewed for another year. I love the Heyward!! Most beautiful apartments in West Ashley/Charleston. I moved from out of state and my boss did a self guided tour while I was in Zoom. I’m so glad I chose to live here. High end finishes, large windows for natural light, hardwood like flooring, granite, walk in closets, washer and dryer in unit, huge balcony. Amazing salt water pool and fitness center. Business center is awesome. Super fun clubhouse events every month!! Food trucks 3 Thursday's of the month. Valet trash/pest control too! Another fantastic asset to The Heyward is the entire leasing team! The community manager (Jen) is so welcoming, assistant manager (Suzie) is helpful and friendly, leasing (Ariana) is very kind and brings a great energy to the office. Everyone is always engaging, kind and helpful with anything we need. The maintenance team (Leonard and Justin) are fast, friendly and efficient. Housekeeper (Zelle) is always smiling and great at her job. I love calling The Heyward home! I’ve lived here for a year and half and renewed my lease to continue my residence. Highly recommend living at this property!!

The Heyward has been my home for a few years. I have lived in MANY complexes and this one is the only one that actually feels like a community. Most of the residents are super friendly and helpful and the staff has always been very responsive. The Maintenance team is on point! All of my service requests have been remedied the following morning. The community is extremely pet friendly and has an abundance of furry friend for your fur baby to play with. The staff puts in many hours to host socials every month and the property has food trucks on Thursdays! These are always appreciated. In short I never want to leave!

There are only so many good things to say about what is easily the most upscale apartment complex in Charleston- from the solid granite countertops and top-of-the-line appliances to the stunning tile showers and beautiful hard-wood laminate flooring, but the thing that really makes The Heyward feel like home is the amazing office staff. Ariana, Suzie, and Jen work tirelessly organizing and setting up fun community events for all ages in our jaw-dropping clubhouse and pool, all while FLAWLESSLY coordinating maintenance, package deliveries, trash valet, tenant communications, and housekeeping. I am constantly in awe of how perfectly they run this place i call home??

The location is beautiful but management has a terrible attitude. They will be sickly sweet when your looking to move in, but have become unhelpful and nasty once you've signed your lease. Their text message responses being mocking when I ask questions, or them not answering questions properly. Upon my lease renewal with rent increasing 10% (beware!) over previous year and asking to negotiate being I wasn't sure if I could afford - and being told "well maybe this isn't the place for you" - I mean what kind of heartless response is that?! Really unfortunately management, Jenn is very snarky and has by far some of the worst customer service skills I've seen anywhere in my life.

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We work hard to make sure coming home is a positive experience for all of our residents and it is disappointing to read this. We understand it is frustrating to get a rent increase, but this is the first rental increase in over two years. We use a software that evaluates our rates based on market conditions and we are sure that our rates are in line with the area. We know this doesn't make it better but average rent increase was 14% in 2021. Our industry has experienced a 12% increase in costs in 2021 with rising material costs, labor costs, taxes and insurance. I’ve had a great experience at The Heyward. Love the location, across the street from the Greenway, great for biking and walking along the water. Maintenance is the best I’ve ever encountered, never waited over an hour before my work order was complete, they take care of the grounds really well too. The office team is super friendly and will go out of their way to help you, even if it’s after hours.

This is hands down the best apartment complex ever! It’s super clean, modern and spacious. It really feels like a community here and the friendliest staff I’ve ever encountered. If you have any pets, they will also love it here. My dogs love the dog park and spacious areas for taking walks. I love the events they throw and yummy food trucks! Also the gym is top notch! If you are considering moving here- you won’t regret it!!

I have lived at the Heyward since it opened. I love my apartment. Have lots of trees and a big grassy area for my pup(yes that’s him on the website) Leonard the maintenance supervisor is great. All my requests have been taken care of in a very short time. He’s very friendly and gives my pup a treat when we see him.
We enjoyed our stay at The Heyward, it couldn’t have been better. Apartment was beautiful and equipped with everything we needed, very nice and comfortable. The location was perfect. The Heyward staff was very helpful and friendly when they welcomed us; and the location was great in the magical city of Charleston. We love Carter Haston properties, we would definitely come again to The Heyward, we had a great time. Would absolutely recommend to stay there!
The Heyward is an excellent choice to live west of the Ashley. The management staff are friendly, and they go the extra mile to accommodate the residents. The maintenance team is always fast and efficient. I visited several apartments along Savannah highway, ant I believe this is the best place to live. The amenities are awesome!
I moved to The Heyward last year and never want to move again. We were greeted with the sweetest, most accommodating and responsive staff. They go above and beyond to make sure you feel at home. The Heyward feels modern yet classic, with a southern charm. The open, well-thought out floor plans provide a spacious feeling like no other. The attention to detail with the large kitchens, granite counter tops, high ceilings, hard wood floors not to mention a beautiful balcony really provides an out of this world living experience. When you leave your apartment you are greeted with smiling neighbors walking their dogs, large oak trees, ponds and even a nature trail for a change of scenery. Our favorite thing to do is grill out, their grills are high quality and the large fire pit is a huge bonus. I workout everyday in the gym, my other home. It is by far the cleanest, most efficient apartment gym I’ve ever seen. They have cables, dumbbells, benches, weight machines and multiple options for cardio. Lastly, if you want to feel a sense of community you’re in the right place. During the 3 social events a month you are guaranteed to meet other friendly residents who soon become close friends, it’s so much fun! Fulfillment and enjoyment all around.
My fiancé and I have been living here going on three years now and absolutely love it. The amenities are great, it’s affordable and you can’t beat the location! We have no complaints!
We just renewed our lease (again!) at The Heyward. This is such a beautiful property — short commute to beautiful downtown Charleston, yet surrounded by natural beauty, waterways, and beaches. The management and maintenance are 1st-rate, with superior amenities. Best in Charleston...we love it here!!
I am moving out after being here for two years. This apartment complex was everything I was looking for. The positives are that the space is laid out well, the amenities are great, the maintenance team is the best ever. The downsides are that the upscale feel has not been kept up and the rules don't seem to apply to everyone. I have to say overall it's been a great experience because I've met some wonderful people that I can't imagine life without now. There are always downsides to living in an apartment community.
Been at the Heyward for 2 years now and I’ve really loved living here! Definitely has a resort feel to it. It’s a great community to be apart of! I’ve met some amazing people and the staff is always so friendly and helpful! Every time I have visitors, they are constantly blown away by the Heyward and all the monthly events they do for us here. Wouldn’t change a thing!
The amenities at The Heyward are great, but that’s about the only positive I can say. The apartment buildings themselves must not be built well and must have poor insulation. I can hear everything my neighbors are doing and sometimes saying. When my neighbor walks or even runs through the apartment, our whole apartment shakes. The train behind the apartments is very loud even if you’re not in a building right by it. I’ve contacted the leasing office and the courtesy office about the noise but they continuously say, “that’s just apartment living”. This is the only apartment I’ve lived in that I’ve had this experience in, and I’ve lived in several places. It seems as though the leasing office only enforces community rules on certain individuals. There have been a few trailers and boats (supposedly not allowed) parked around the community but nothing has been done about it for months. There are a couple of broken down cars too that have been there for weeks, but since there’s a parking pass on them, I guess that makes it okay despite what the community rules say despite the limited parking. I’ve also witnessed people smoking on their balconies and this is supposed to be a non-smoking property. Because of all of this, we are questioning renewing the lease when it’s time as it seems many others have done because there’s constantly people moving in and out of here.

I really wish I could give 5 stars and I would but despite the beautiful, spacious apartments, there are some deal breakers. (1) The early morning lawn care. I get one day off and would like to sleep in a little late, but the 8am mowing of the lawn won’t allow it. (2) The breezeways, staircase, etc is extremely filthy. The buildings are kept up with pressure washing, but the stairs (pavement) breezeways are just filthy. A lot of stains from trash leaking, bird poop, etc. (3) Very limited parking. The Heyward is perfect. My Wife and I relocated to Charleston nearly a year ago. We have recently been looking for a new place that is affordable, modern, and in a good location. The Heyward was able to fit all of our needs. The leasing staff was extremely helpful in making sure we were fully satisfied and happy with our decision to move. We love the open floor plans, natural light, and updated fixtures/appliances that truly make the home look and feel luxurious. We couldn’t be happier with our decision to move here and plan to be long term tenants!
