The city of Williamsburg is like stepping back in time. Well, in the historic district anyway. Founded in 1632, many of the settlement’s original structures still stand today as museums – all of Duke of Gloucester Street is a living history museum.
Because of its long-standing historical significance, tourism has a huge presence in Williamsburg. Other attractions that make up this fully-progressive city include Virginia’s oldest winery as well as a botanical garden.
The College of William and Mary, the nation’s second-oldest school, resides in Williamsburg. Its campus is in walking distance of historic sites, award-winning restaurants, taverns, and boutiques.
Williamsburg residents enjoy a plethora of conveniences, including direct access to major roadways and public transit. For those who enjoy golf, the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course is minutes away from town.

Property Ratings at The James On Merrimac
This place is unsanitary and unsafe. Black mold from all of the windows leaking. AC units never maintained so they leak and emit a foul smell. We were evacuated, recently, in the middle of the night due to a faulty smoke detector. Fire marshal was onsite, assuming to hit them with the violation. The sprinkler system pipes are closed and locked out. They had a lady roaming the hall as a “firewatch”, but she hasnt been around in a while. Probably one of the “luxury” amenities we pay for. Stay away from this dump. They are charging well over market price for the junk they offer.
The James is overpriced, mismanaged, and run down. Despite the appearance of a renovated building, the upgrades were cheaply done and poorly executed. The "new" floors are peeling up, there is water damage in the units and in the common areas, the HVAC system has a permanent high-pitched buzzing sound that they have been unable to fix, and there aren't enough dumpsters for the whole building, leading to constant trash buildup in the parking lot that causes a foul smell and pest problems. Management is unresponsive and incompetent, and has only gotten worse since ROSS took over. The property has constant issues, including frequent outages of water, power, and elevator service. The security is terrible, the key fob system often goes down, leaving the doors unlocked. This building is not worth the price.
Since day one, our apartment has been falling apart. Paint is peeling, hardware was installed sloppily and incorrectly, and the floor boards are warping and popping up in places. Poorly laid out floor plans mean even if the square footage is there, it's not very usable. Maintenance is helpful, but the leasing office is not very responsive. I have tried to get in contact via phone, email, and in person and have a difficult time. Would not recommend moving here if you could afford anywhere else in Williamsburg.
