Property Ratings at The Lafayette Apartments
Well I've been here going on 12 years n I like living here so far no problems
Great building, wonderful staff, and amazing location
Great location, great staff, very professional and very courteous and always willing to help.
Excellent living. Close to walking trails and the Lafayette River. Beautiful views. Strong sense of community.
I think this a great community. I enjoy the view and building is clean.
I love the location and area. I love the staff. It’s just a little problems that escalated to bigger ones that I don’t enjoy!
I love living here. A pretty solid area. All maintenance is dealt normally same day or relatively quick. I'm glad I moved here honestly. Staff members are also a massive plus.
I love the building. I love the location. I love the community staff. I am just not happy about my plaster issues in my kitchen issues. Also still pretty disappointed in the way they handled disposing of my personal property from one of the storage closets.
Overall pleasant moving in experience. The apartment is comfortable and cozy. I will most likely extend my lease, If work requires me to stay in the area.
Great apartments with a welcoming atmosphere and management that are a rare-breed of compassionate. Minor issues with plumbing, windows, and roaches. Nothing that's a dealbreaker, or that the incredibly prompt maintenance can't fix.
The building though old with a few issues some major some cosmetic, has come a LONG way from when I first moved in. The onsite team makes the issues small and less intrusive into your daily life as much as humanly possible!!
I live in a studio apartment and I really enjoy it! The staff is super helpful. The gym facility is very nice! A lot of the units have balconies which is cool. Super close to the naval base. In a pretty safe area, that’s something I was concerned about while looking to live alone, but I do feel safe here. Nice neighbors.
Excellent office staff, clean building, great maintenance team, and spacious apartments.
I'm enjoying my stay here at The Lafayette apartments. I moved from a one bedroom apartment to an upgraded studio with no problems. The staff was very accommodating in getting me the place I wanted. I had 2 small repairs redone to the kitchen and bathroom floor. The staff had the contractors onboard within 48hrs to do the repairs. I received brand new blinds too. Thank you so much!
A great rental community with a beautiful view, spacious apartments, and a short drive from ODU and Downtown Norfolk.
I've only had positive experiences here. The move in process was simple and efficient. The staff is very friendly and the building looks great! Loving the view from my balcony. It's a very peaceful area
The Lafayette is a community that’s always evolving and expanding on the resident’s living experience.
It's a nice place to live keeping the building clean n free of drugs
i genuinely love living here! the staff is great, and i love my apartment.
Awesome place to live. The maintenance team usually get my work order completed ASAP. Thank you!
Great location if you want to be in the Ghent area. Colonial Place is a nice location, and there are tons of amenities nearby. Plenty of shops, eateries, and breweries within minutes of The Lafayette. You are 5-10 mins from Downtown Norfolk and about 20-25 mins from Town Center in VB. We are in a flood zone, so you should be mindful of that before wanting to move here and be careful where you park. If there isn't any parking in the lot then the neighborhood behind is a good place to park. Neighbors are friendly and sometimes let you pet their puppies. The maintenance crew is fast with inquiries and the front office is friendly.
Great location for the naval base or for the college. Spacious apartments with unique floorplans, all with there own balcony. Friendly and helpful staff that repairs maintenance problems quickly.
I’ve only been here 4 months and the maintenance team and staff have been wonderful! I highly recommend this place.
The Lafayette apartment complex is in a convenient location to anyone working in Norfolk. It provides safe living conditions with friendly staff and occupants. They have multiple floor plans to meet all needs, certainly supported exactly what I wanted.
It’s been the actual worst place I’ve ever lived. Between terrible management and the god awful bug problem i would give my strongest recommendation to find a different place to live.
The Lafayette is where you want to be I've lived here 7 times over the course of my life, but I always find my way back to the place that feels the most like home here at The lafayette. My neighbors and the staff are really like a family here. I love my apartment, and I have lived in a studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom before. I've also been in the non renovated and renovated apartments, and I love them the same! The staff really cares about you, and views us here as a family.
I have been here only one week. Roaches are basically living with me rent free. A/c is utter garbage and barely works. The ceiling fan has its blades put on backwards. Oh, and did I mention roaches? Do not move here!
The majority of my time living at the Lafayette was smooth, and the studio apartment is good size. However there is a pretty serious bug problem. When I moved in I stupidly thought it wouldn’t be that bad because I had an apartment on the 12th floor however a few months in and I realized how wrong I was, the Lafayette sprays but I’m sure that they are doing a haphazard job because there is no results shown. Also my biggest issue and why I left the least stars was the fact that the apartment is undergoing renovations and during that time your apartment is left completely open for the maintenance individuals. Those who had access to my home during a plumbing update, who WERE GIVEN ACCESS to my MY apartment STOLE from me and it has been HELL trying to get the apartment staff to work with me in seeking repercussions and compensation EVEN THOUGHi purchased their renters insurance. Overall my safety and security is most important to me and lack of trustworthy individuals working at the place you like seriously disturbs that.
I thought that I was finding a steal when I came across the Lafayette, but I was only getting what I was paying for. From the time we moved in we had roaches. We had serious water damage on the ceiling BEFORE we moved in. This wasn't fixed until months after moving in and pestering the office almost weekly. I never felt safe in this building, as most times the back door was left open and you wouldn't need your key fob to enter. People would often sleep in the lobby on the couches and I had no way of knowing if they lived there or just walked in through the doors. The cops were often seen at the building. Cars were constantly getting broken into in the parking lot (mine included). There was never any parking even though the lot was supposed to be decal controlled. Dogs would urinate in the elevators and stairwells and the mess would be left. Maintenance was extremely slow to tend to our requests, even those we thought were considered emergency maintenance requests. You are able to hear almost everything through the walls and air vents. All of the appliances and cabinets are old and starting to really fail. The laundry room was nearly always full and I would have to wait around for my turn to grab a washer or a dryer. Moving in/out is a hassle since there is only two (small) elevators and one ramp that is at the front entrance only. I ignored all of the negative reviews before moving in and I wish I hadn't. I also wish that I had better things to say about this place, but they have a lot of work that needs to be done. You may have to pay a little more at some place else, but I can guarantee that you'll at least get your money's worth elsewhere.
Property Manager at The Lafayette Apartments, Responded To This Review
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We always appreciate feedback from our residents. We're disappointed to read that you had maintenance delays and problems with crowded common spaces. Will you please contact us at customerservice@thedonaldsongroup.com so we can address your concerns? Thank you!
I've lived in this building for almost 25 years and I have to say I can't imagine living any place else. From the maintenance crew to the office staff you have a caring group of people whose main purpose is to make you glad you live here. Sure there are issues but you find those any place you live. What makes the difference is the top notch professionalism of everyone who works here. They just installed new vinyl floors in my kitchen and entryway. I can't believe that something so simple could change the entire look and feel of a room. I hope to stay here for many years to come!
This place is a roach infested junk hole. The entire time I lived here I've had problems with roaches. They sprayed my apartment weekly and I put traps everywhere but it never helped. Not only that, the elevators are always broken. Management doesn't help anything. They went through 3 different sets of people while I was living there. They're always rude and fake. They also tried to evict me for not paying a pet deposit but they really had lost my check. If you move here, save all your receipts, buy a lot of bug poison, and be prepared to always take the stairs even if you're on the top floor.
I've always been a private rental, type renter... unique spaces, hardwood floors, etc. This is the first "community living" rental experience I've been through since college (long time ago) and it's been a breeze. I love the finishes on the remodeled two bedroom home that I will be moving into next week. The 8", or however thick, concrete between the homes offers nice, peace of mind. While I look forward to meeting my neighbors, I don't want to know what they are having for dinner. In the office: Melanie, Robert and Ashley, along with every resident I've met have been so friendly and helpful. The customer service that I've received has made up for anything that might be lacking in the home or community. A big thank you to the manager and her staff for your help in making this choice an easy one.
The staff working in the office are very "fake" and "plastic". Management seems to be very disorganized. Companies have changed every year I've lived here. The air conditioning doesn't begin to cool units. Rents are well above the area for what you get. Avoid!!!
Poor staff they change very often and never know what is going on, or so they say.
The worst place I've ever rented by far: 1. Elevator constantly broken 2. Fridge broken for over 3 weeks 3. Had no AC in the bedroom for almost a year 4. Parking lot floods 5. Change in management 3 times in 2 yrs 6. I had to go to court to provide proof that I payed my rent on time because of managements mistake. 7. Over priced for condition of unit 8. bathroom very small 9. small kitchen, no dishwasher, small single sink.
This is a great building close to ODU, and downtown Norfolk. Everyone here is very friendly. I love my studio apartment here because it is a bit larger than I would have expected and it is priced graciously compared to similar places near by. However, the kitchen I have could use an update and I have found quite a few bugs which is unsettling considering I thought we just had a routine spraying. But overall I am a very happy new resident.
This is my second apartment in Norfolk, wanting to be within walking distance of Old Dominion University. I left my previous apartment in West Ghent because the neighbors were noisy. The Lafayette is quiet and the neighbors are very nice. The management is responsive, but it is an older building with some quirks. The view to the east is gorgeous and I love seeing the sunrise every morning. The apartment is spacious for a studio and reasonably priced. A few cautions- there are no thermostats, but the temperature has been fine for me- you can crank the AC up if you want. Also I have had trouble with bugs in the kitchen. The renovations are on-going- one of my neighbor said he has lived there for years and it is always being renovated, but it is not particularly disruptive most of the time.
My first impression of the apartment building that was most likely a hotel in a previous life was that it was aged but efficient. They offer good prices for the area but once you move in you quickly understand why the prices are so cheap for what they call riverfront apartments. If you live on the opposite side of the river like I do you face a parking lot with a view of your car and a nearby neighborhood. The air conditioning in the building is aged and molded over . The kitchen space is terrible and the sink and tub in the bathroom shows the apartments age . The studios are more spacious then others in the area but the buildings age brings its value down and has me wondering why I haven't looked into breaking my lease yet .
The second I moved in I had a horrible roach problem. They have sprayed many times but my problem is still not resolved. There is poor communication between maintenance staff and the office. Nothing is done in a timely mannor or when they tell you they will be coming. They tell you they will work with your schedule but they don't at all. Probably because they have an issue with A/C units flooding and not working. Everything that can break in the building does. I.E. Elevators, doors, washers, a/c, pipes and more. The parkinglot floods often. There also is constant construction all day. So you are delayed getting in and out for work or woken up from sleep. I believe you get what you pay for, but I didn't pay for this. They are increasing rent for renovations. Don't let the new floors and appliances fool you. They won't stay new for long with all the bugs that hang around.
