Property Ratings at The Union at St John's.
Their autopay system is buggy and sometimes doesn’t draw funds. Their finances and documentation is all over the place, they sneakily REMOVED our reasons for leaving from the final sign-out forms and we had to email them to put that in. Communication is haphazard and inconsistent. They claimed they hired security for patrolling the sketchy Multnomah St portion, but I never saw anyone once. They planted new bushes and then didn’t water them. The road to get into the parking garage is constantly blocked off by buses and ubers for the neighboring hotel. To top it all off, they had the GALL to raise our rent above the maximum amount allowed in Multnomah County. Don’t move in here, at least not under current ownership (or whatever private equity acquires them)
First off, the management is terrible. Voicemails were never returned. Emails were never responded to. We even used the "suggestion box" with no response. We left the apartment immaculate and in better condition than when we moved in and they still charged us $2600 early lease termination fee and $600 in "painting and cleaning" fees. I have left voicemails and talked to Chris in the office, who says he has nothing to do with it, and have not heard from anyone with an explanation for the $600 theft of our deposit. The halls were dirty, the elevators were filthy and only one seemed to work at a time. We finally decided to move because of the constant smell of marijuana on our floor despite it being a non-smoking building. It is so strong it would fill our apartment and we would have to leave. I complained several times and never received a response. There are homeless people sleeping in the bushes and in the entry which made it feel unsafe to walk the dog in the morning. At least once a week a car window would be broken out in front of the building. Management posted a sign in the elevator saying they hired a security company to patrol but I never saw them once. It is really sad because this is a decent building in a cool part of St. Johns. Like the other reviews mention, it is all management.
I’ve lived at the Union at St. John’s since January. There are many wonderful things about living here, but the highlight is by far seeing Mt Hood AND the St. John’s bridge from my apartment. I live in a 2 bedroom with my partner and our 2 dogs. We have plenty of room for living comfortably and a storage unit down the hall from our apartment to house our unused items. There is a lovely patio, garage parking, a nice community room and gym, there’s a dog washing station and monthly resident repurpose and recycle events. The apartment is really quiet except for street traffic, but it’s to be expected in the more urban setting. We love the aesthetic of the building, the attentive maintenance staff, the location (walking distance to several parks and Lombard street), and most importantly, this building is full of friendly people and adorable doggos making it feel like home. If you’ve never been to St. John’s, it’s a great little community with everything you need nearby/within walking distance, access to disc golf at Pier Park, Chimney park for the dogs, lots of restaurants and bars, several grocery markets, and the most beautiful bridge in all of Portland. I highly recommend The Union at St John’s!
The Union is a solid apartment building, you can't really complain. I have lived here for 2 years and I've always enjoyed my experience. I'm always cared for and accommodated by management and others who live there. The one thing that can be tough is parking (if you don't pay for a spot inside the garage). It may seem like a pricey place, but you get what you pay for and it's a quality living environment.
The Union at St. Johns has been a great place to live. The building and its units are very clean and modern. The building is in a great location. Staff and residents are very friendly as well.
I really enjoy living here. The building is very new and the apartments are nice and modern. The location is great, within walking distance to many restaurants/bars/shops as well as the grocery store and Cathedral Park. The building feels very secure and the staff is helpful. Touring was easy and informative, and options for lease length are more flexible than anywhere else comparable.
I just moved in to a two bedroom here and I have no regrets. The building is very secure, I love the location (right on top of sparrow bakery!), and noise outside and above is very minimal. The apartments themselves are very impressive. I love the layout and all the natural lighting. It's very clean cut and modern looking.
