Bordering the Chesapeake Bay and the Elizabeth River in southeastern Virginia, Norfolk is the second most populous city in the state. This coastal oasis is home to the world’s largest naval base and the North American Headquarters for NATO, keeping with the city’s long history of strategic military and trade operations.
But it’s not all business in Norfolk. There’s no shortage of things to do in the city. Being a renter in Norfolk affords you the opportunity to stroll through the lush Norfolk Botanical Garden, explore the latest exhibits at the Chrysler Museum of Art, and enjoy riverfront views at Town Pointe Park. Sports is a prevalent appeal to the area, with the Norfolk Admirals hockey team playing at Scope Arena. Families appreciate the kid-friendly fun in the city, like visiting the Virginia Zoo.

Property Ratings at The Wainwright
This place has new management in 2024 and I really cannot overstate how horrible they have been. I was left without working heat for an entire week while temperatures dropped into the 20s. It’s impossible to get in touch with anyone, they are unresponsive and ignore maintenance emergencies. Do not live here under any circumstances, not worth the headache for the price. I would give zero stars if I could.
Going on my 2nd year at this property and haven't had any issues. Love the location is walking distance to bars and restaurants but still far enough to not have to deal with all the noise. Great monthly social functions and the rooftop is fantastic!
I lived in the wainwright apartments for the better part of 4 years. Each year it seemed like the restrictions and expenses increased and started to outweigh the benefits of the building. The views are second to none, and i never had an issue with utilizing the roof top lounge or grill area- which is the highlight of the building. However, the leasing office continuously got worse in communication as the years went on and it seemed as if I was doing their job when it came to following up with questions/concerns (often times i had to contact them 3-4 times before i got an appropriate response). There aren't that many residents in the building, this didn't make any sense. They started to charge, or threaten to charge, for every little thing and it started to feel like i was living in a college dorm. The location is great, but i dont know if i would recommend the building moving forward.
The rent is way too much for such a little space. All of my appliances broke and my place went under water earlier in the year. The pet and parking fees are ridiculous. Although, it is very convenient living downtown and the view on the roof is amazing. Still, I would not live here again or recommend it.
The Wainwright Downtown is a great community - friendly neighbors and staff, great restaurants and bars, music/events frequently in Waterside park, and very dog friendly. The apartments are pretty great as well.
