Genesee is a uniquely shaped neighborhood wrapped around West Seattle’s vibrant Junction. Genesee offers residents a tranquil home environment draped in lush greenery. The neighborhood is largely residential, providing a wide variety of modern apartments, townhomes, and houses available for rent with spectacular views thanks to Genesee’s hilly topography.
Although Genesee itself is mostly residential, the community is convenient to Junction’s many diverse eateries, independent shops, and specialty services, which are strewn along California Avenue Southwest. Genesee is also just a short drive away from the Industrial District and Downtown Seattle, as well as beautiful outdoor venues like Alki Beach Park and Lincoln Park.

Property Ratings at The Whittaker
Conveniently placed close to every store or business that you might need. Quiara helped my wife and I so much we really appreciate her help. We moved here from 3000 miles away and she has made it the smoothest move in process ever.
Love my apartment for many reasons. Convient location, most everything is in walking distance. New appliances and finishes. Hard wood floors. Large windows and great views.

The maintenance team responded quickly and thoroughly.
I love all the convenience of the property and neighborhood
treated with respect, professionalism while also caring for residents is a key part of the job i appreciate that to the fullest !
The staff at the Whittaker were very helpful and made the process so efficiently effortless during our move in process. Which is super helpful when moving to a new place is already a daunting experience. Really recommend the Whittaker for its total experience as well as the apartment and all of its amenities does very well works for us.
Everything has been great with one exception. The recent fire alarm issues. I work from home and this issue has started to be frequent. Luckily, I no longer have a pet. I can imagine this would be distressing for animals.
Very strong welcome home and well worth the wait!!! Amazing place with a view of the city. Cherry on top of the cake is the fireplace to chill & relax with friends.
I seldom write reviews but I think the Whittaker deserve a 5-star review. The staff is amazing and very helpful. They have went above and beyond on multiple occasions to assist me. Something I've never experienced with the previous apartment complex I used to live in. I'm surprised by some of the negative reviews on here. This is a multi family residential building that has over 300 apartments. Of course things will break and go out of service. The staff always does a good job with communicating to residents. I had the opportunity to speak to the staff about some of the issues at the property through out my 3 years living here and I can say that they are doing the best that they can to address the issues. They helped me understand some of the things that went on at the property and quite frankly, they are outside of their control. There are multiple moving parts behind the scene that I didn't understand until they explained it to me. All I have to say is, there is always two side to the story and we need to be open minded. Also, it's worth noting that the building is shared with retail spaces on the first floor, so sometimes the Whittaker management would need to coordinate with them to get things fixed since the retail spaces is managed by another company. This can sometime delay things. Overall, I love living here I would recommend anyone to live here.
Great location and floorplan, terrible management practices, ridiculous rent increases considering the quality of service, the state of the buildings, and lack of basic services/infrastructure.

Prompt response to maintenance requests, wonderful front office staff as well!
This is a great place to stay when you can’t afford bougie fixtures appliances and finishes but want a sleek neutral and updated look
Always helpful, nice, quick response, and gets the job done.
My partner and I have lived at The Whittaker for two years and it’s been a great experience! Love the area, the layout of our unit is exactly what we were looking for, and interactions with the leasing office and maintenance teams have all been positive. Definitely recommend The Whittaker when looking for a place to call home!
Well maintained building, very nice staff. Package delivery is the only negative
Apartment itself and convenience of location are great. Rent is way too high, property is constantly dirty, people are allowed to smoke in the garages and in community areas, doesn’t feel as safe as it should be.
I’ve never lived anywhere with such a high-standard of quality both in my apartment, the community amenities, and the staff. The staff from my tour through move-in (and after) have been communicative and incredibly helpful. I had the same consistent contact from day 1 (Quiara) but have met many staffers since and they’ve all been so friendly and kind. This is simply not the case at most other properties.
Live somewhere else. Maintenance orders take days or are just closed without being solved. Units are cheap materials and lack sufficient sound proofing. The office personnel give conflicting or incorrect information. Management and maintenance don’t make my life easier; but require me to manage them. Just keep looking.
Overall I like living here at The Whittaker. My move-in was not a standard one but I was not asked to be a part of the move-in check of my apartment, which I found odd. I had to email about some damage I saw and was told it was logged but there are a lot of scratches and damage that I was never able to make note of, nor was I privy to what they listed. I thought this was a mandatory part of a move-in. The staff really is great, friendly, accommodating, and always willing to help, It's easy to pay rent but the parcel room/Luxor situation is much much lower than my expectations, a lot of the common area hallways are stained and dogs are always having accidents, bad owners do not pick up or put in work orders for cleaning. Back to the positives - I love all the ways to enter and leave the building and the common area amenities that can be booked for events are amazing!! I can't wait to utilize them, thankfully they are not as weathered as the hallways throughout the buildings and floors.

Dear Resident, We appreciate your feedback and will work to improve based on your suggestions. One of our associates will contact you soon to address your concerns. Thank you for being a valued resident. Best, The Whittaker.
The Whittaker is an amazing place to call home. You have a beautiful modern place you call your own and well thought out meeting and chilling areas and rooms for when you need to entertain, even on a chilly evening, you can enjoy one of the fireplaces on the rooftop. The staff are very professional and friendly and care about your concerns. I would highly recommend it and the location is superb!
I love living in this building. The staff are professional and efficient.
The staff was very helpful with me and my on line application, and knowledgeable about the whole community.
The Whittaker offers nice units well finished easy to make a "home sweet home". I love the location that is great with the convenience of the grocery stores, gyms facilities, and restaurants available around it. It makes my life after work easier & pleasant.
Maintenance Team is the best! They are always quick to respond and even at off-hours!
The apartment and amenities at the Whittaker are outstanding. I love the conference rooms, court yard, roof top deck and choice of equipment in the gym. Quiara, who works in the rental office, is always prompt and courteous. And the super convenient access to great s restaurants, and shops is phenomenal . Who needs a pantry when there's a Whole Foods in the building! There's a lot to love here. There are a few things that degrade the experience. The bottom of the north east stairwell always smells of urine. The carpet should be removed from this area and a thorough cleaning done. The elevator in the same corner is accessible from the parking garage but requires a fob to use, meaning residents have to escorts any of their guests utilizing the short term parking. The package room is in the south building, which causes several issues. Packages are frequently left in the north mail room with no protection. Packages that do make it to the secure south package room are often thrown in with hundreds of other packages. The staff comes in from time to time and tries to organize but usually the room is a shambles and packages are hard to find. Because the package room is in the south building, retrieval of large packages often require use of a dolly to get back to apartments in the north building. Fortunately the rental office loans out a dolly for this purpose, but they require residents leave their driver license as a security deposit. The last time I did that and returned 5 mins later I found the rental office had closed for lunch, leaving me in a panic that I would not have my license returned for an hour. Fortunately the cleaning staff was able to track someone down who then returned my license. The whole package delivery system needs a redesign both to protect packages and make accessing them easier. The Whittaker is a wonderful building and has some truely excellent staff. With a little attention to some of these details this could be an unreservedly great place to live.
When I first moved into the Whittaker, I was pretty much in love with the place. Previous employees made me feel very welcome and were more sociable with the residents. 2023 has been the second year of living here for me, and I feel as though it has gone downhill. For example, the elevators are constantly breaking down and needing maintenance. The main access door to the roof is now locked and I’m pretty sure we never got any explanation for that. I used to love going and watching the sunrise with my morning cup of coffee out on the roof but now it feels like more of a hassle. I either have to go through the common area (which is locked at certain times) or go up another floor. I don’t go to the roof hardly ever anymore which makes me sad. The community garden isn’t well taken care of. I would try to manage it a bit myself at this point, if I had a gardening background. The overall cleanliness of the building seems as though it has declined. And it just feels “sketchier”. For example, someone smeared an unknown substance on my front door. I love my apartment, and it’s location. I love living in the heart of West Seattle. But, the Whittaker just doesn’t feel the same anymore to me.
The Whitaker is a defining apartment community in West Seattle. As a larger community, they employ a number of friendly professional maintenance personnel, who can rapidly and effectively resolve any issue that arises in your apartment. One of the best organized communities in the area.
Good points: clean place, friendly staff, great location. Bad points: rent is a bit high, and significantly increased, and that was not properly communicated to us.
I enjoyed my previous unit but I moved into a new unit recently and it wasn’t cleaned properly beforehand, I can hear the footsteps of the person who lives above constantly while I work and sleep and I’m looking forward to once I can move out of this apartment
Requests maintenance at the Whitaker are very efficient. Once you place their order being emergency or just a regular check/ service they come very fast solving the issue.
For the extreme rent price I pay here the overall service from staff, lack of cleanliness, and things like us paying extra for a “package locker” when there are no lockers just hundreds of packages jumbled together in a room together is nuts. For how much people spend here you would think they would take better care of cleaning and not rip us off by charging for something where my packages can still definitely be stolen.
Maintenance staff is excellent. They have a huge job here and do a wonderful job taking care of all of the residents
Between the unfortunate building design choices (package room in another building, box recycling outside the building in the alley, no handicapped door access) and the north building being ignored by management (moving elevator is often forgotten and locked for days, front door was broken for months,) just keep looking. There are many other choices in the surrounding blocks.
I love living at the Whittaker! The staff is helpful and friendly and the community is clean, safe and fun! I love the rooftop deck!
Maintenance crew is excellent. We have been disappointed with garage security that resulted in 4 car break ins and storage break in totaling around $35,000 in damage and stolen goods. We were forced to sell one car and had extensive damage that took a year and a half to repair. Th luxor room is also an issue. The leasing office staff has been great but also doesn’t seem to have authority to implement change. Thank you, The Bergers
I just moved 3 weeks ago & I have been enjoying living at the Whittaker.
The Whittaker so many wonderful warm experiences throughout the community and with the staff. I'm so glad I made it my home!!!! All the best to person deciding to share in this community and home.
Staff excellent. The apt had a few areas that were not properly cleaned. There was an item left wet inside the dishwasher and several of the cupboards had stains in them, as well as under the sink.
Pro: the amenities, such as conference rooms, lounges, rooftop deck, fire pits/ grills, private lounging area. Living above Whole Foods Cons: the price for the apartments/ the layout of the apartments doesn’t make complete sense. It’s almost like the builder intentionally wanted to make the apartments smaller. It always smells like smoke in the hallways. Homeless people have been found in the stairwell many times and the Whittaker has not done anything to increase security, the management at the Whittaker seems to be very lackluster. The gym is nice but the equipment seems dated and old. Could use newer machines or more equipment overall. The parking rates are so expensive on top of the expensive parking and the nearby parking is “2 hour only” and police ticket it routinely. You have to park far away if you can’t afford the underground parking.
I’ve enjoyed the past 2 years at The Whittaker. My building is quiet, clean, and I feel I’m getting a great deal for the space and amenities. You can’t beat the location convenience to necessities and now that the bridge is open it makes commenting out of West Seattle a breeze!
Great Job Guys excellent customer service and knowledgeable as well
I love living here. My apartment is beautiful and I feel at home. I have an incredible view and I’m loving every minute. I just renewed for another 15 months. Thank you for making this such a nice place to be!
I’ve lived in the building for over 2 years now and I feel like the building has gone down hill. Especially when it come to safety and things being fixed.
