Property Ratings at Union at Midtown
At face value, this property is extremely appealing: the location, the ease of facility access and student lifestyle. However, the pretty marketing is just a mask for the truly subpar quality that the Union is. Basic amenities such as a printer, and secondary security door lock, remained broken the entirety of my stay. Moreover, these two aspects, just to name two example among many, were broadcasted on the Union's website to entice potential renters. That being said, the maintenance and property behaved abhorrently in rectifying these issue. Not only did they take months to fix a simple issue, they acted as though we were the issue for raising a maintenance issue for an important part of our apartment. For example, we spent three consecutive months without a functioning washer and dryer. While I cannot speak highly enough of Bethany, I would not recommend this place to rent. The cost of monthly rent is not proportional to what is provided.
I just applied for a one bed apt and after two days I cancelled it. They told me at the time of applying that the application fee is non-refundable but the security deposit of $200 is. However, I never got my money back. The people at the front desk were super rude, unwilling to help and also lied about sending my money to my address, when infact I never received any.
Lived here during the 2016-2017 academic year. Pros- was very close to my classes, all costs included in rent, master bathroom, fully furnished. Cons- no overnight parking associated with the building, the building had some heating/cooling problems on the floor I lived on and the only compensation was to give myself and my roommate a small heating fan in winter since our unit dipped to 60 degrees, no prorating on rent you will be expected to pay the full month regardless of when you move in/out. Biggest issue I had was communication between office staff and the manager. I was verbally told I could move into my apartment a week early from the original date (So I signed a rental contract based on this) and three weeks before the early move in I was emailed and told it wasn't possible. Which was an issue since my work contract started three days earlier than the contract move in date. Had a similar problem with subletting for the end of my contract with communication and they didn't have the room turned over in time for my subletter (Biggest issue is they wanted to "work it out" and not change contract language and I decided to trust them verbally- which meant when things fell through management was indifferent since the contract writing had not been changed and I lost out.) Had to contact twice about my deposit, the second time was after 50 days of my move out date.
The stairwell smells of urine. The staff members are polite and prompt until you sign your lease but then are apathetic and inattentive. The maintenance men are lazy and incompetent. You will wait at least a week for repairs. My washer is done for. Do yourself a favor and move elsewhere. Jess
I am in my second year here and I love it! It's great that all of the utilities are included and that the apartment is fully furnished. The appliances and furniture are nice and modern and good quality. One added bonus about living here is that you have your very own washer and dryer, which for me is a make or break! The office staff is very friendly and are always willing to go above and beyond to help. It's a convenient location for any Wayne State student like myself. Also it is found in the heart of Midtown surrounded by great places to eat! The only down side is that they do not have parking, of course not very many places in Detroit do offer parking. For the price and all that you get there is nothing better around! I would suggests this place to everyone!
This apartment complex was just ok. I was a student that attended Wayne State and that is the only thing that I can say was good about it, the convenience. It was right in the middle of campus and it made getting to class easy. . Let me start off by saying that I should have known better from the start. They only have one model available to view and it’s a one bed room. They would not let me walk through and see a two bed room without signing the lease. The room was an ok size but very small for what the rent was. My roommate and I paid $779 a piece ($1558 total) for a box. It was a nice box, new w/utilities and furnished but WAY too expensive. This has taught me NEVER to sign a lease without seeing the apartment first. The parking was HORRIBLE. Not only did I pay a crazy amount for rent to live in this box, I had to come out of pocket another $250 for a parking pass (per semester) in the parking structure (which is a block and a half away from the apartment). I felt very unsafe walking from my car to my apartment at night. They do have minimal parking under the structure but it is only 20 min parking and parking for the surrounding businesses. They will tow your car at your own expense if you park there for longer. The office staff for the most part was ok. But if you challenge what they are saying it is a different story. . I found out months later after moving out, when I checked my credit score they put a payment in collections. I received no letter, no nothing about rent not being paid. I paid my rent EVERY MONTH and for some reason they claimed that one of the payments "did not go though" and we were not notified by them or the bank. You would think that if a payment declined that it would show up on the bank statement as well. Initially, they said that I did not pay my rent and later on after getting my lawyer involved they said they found the payment but it did not go through. They also claimed that I left my room a mess and took my security deposit, which was a lie. I should have taken pictures of everything before I left AND did a walk through with the staff! When I called to ask about it, the woman I spoke to was very short and rude to me. The only office member I remember who was very kind was Katie. She was awesome! Overall, I would not recommend anyone to move here, especially if rent increased. My overall experience was poor and it definitely was not worth it.
