Property Ratings at Union Place
This building was gorgeous and friendly when we first rented it, but in the last 6 months it has become almost unlivable. Stains all down the hallway carpet, elevators down all the time, garbage chutes that don’t work properly with garbage piled in the garbage room-we saw roaches crawling all over the bags. There was a party on the roof that lasted until 5 am with music that shook the apartment and it wasnt shut down. It is such a shame to see such a beautiful space get so trashed so quickly and management doesn’t do anything about it despite multiple complaints and reports.

We lived at Union Place for 18 months and loved the experience. The lobby and common spaces are beautiful and feel like an upscale hotel. The cleaning staff does an exceptional job at keeping the place look like new. The concierge staff is welcoming and should be given a special kudos for the amount of packages they deal with on a daily basis. The leasing staff is responsive, friendly, and helpful. Maintenance went above and beyond with any issue big or small and we never had to wait more than a day for something to be handled. The work from home spaces are plentiful and very convenient. Our apartment and the pool had some of the best views of the capital in my opinion. This place is top notch and we would highly recommend to future residents.

Thin walls and windows, creating a loud and unpleasant living environment. Leasing staff have not been helpful in addressing the issue.

Stolen packages, elevators never work, noisy neighbors and building management completely unresponsive to complaints. They also literally LOST our lease because they had so much turnover.

I am a current resident of Union Place Apartments. I felt compelled to write this review as a way to help warn others if they are considering a move to Union Place under their current lack of respect for residents. I also hope this review helps enact change in how management handles situations with their residents. My wife and I moved to Union Place at the end of January 2022. We were shown the rooftop, pool, gym, common spaces, and bike room, along with other amenities during our tour that we were very excited about. This review will focus on a recent issue of my personal property (Electric Scooter) being stolen from Union Place, and management's refusal to do anything to rectify the situation other than emailing me back and telling me they aren't going to reimburse/help me with my stolen property. The most alarming thing about this issue is that it seems to be a reoccurring problem. One of the things we liked about this building when we moved was their "secure"/"Locked" indoor bike room. I knew the building requires a fob for entry, and that same locked fob entry system was also required to enter the bike room. Ontop of the fob requirement, I had a combination lock system that secured my scooter to a metal pole in the room that was bolted to the floor. One day I went down to get my scooter to go to work, and the only thing that was there was my broken lock system laying on the floor. Someone that had access to our building with the fob (resident or none) entered the bike room with the intent to steal. They had to have some kind of hammer or weapon to smash my locking system in the way they did to break it. I reached out immediately to management to report the theft, and also to request them to make this right, as it was properly stolen from a community space they offer their residents as an amenity. I heard back from Ashana who is the Property Manager at Union Place, and her response was basically this wasn't their issue and I should reach out to my renter's insurance for resolution - even though this didn't happen in my apartment, but rather in their "secure" community bike room that they offer as an amenity (part of our high rent). My wife and I don't feel overly safe in a building that allows this kind of theft to exist, especially without any reconciliation for the grieved resident. That is why we are giving Union Place this public review, and hope we can receive appropriate reconciliation for our stolen property.

They don’t control parking so there are never spaces even if you pay- they don’t ticket ppl that sneak in Packages, dogs, and food are stolen and the property does nothing about it. There is always turnover with concierge staff so they never have a clue what is going on

Worst mistake ever, please learn from our mistake. We signed a lease in January, and since then, there have been 3 different sets of concierge teams. That alone should tell you the type of establishment this is. But it gets even better. Horrible Staff. With the staff constantly changing, no one knows what they are doing at all and the leasing agents are just as terrible. If you have a question, do not expect a quick answer. We are still waiting on a response for an email we sent back in April, and if they say they will call you with the answer... expect to be ghosted faster than a tinder date. Packages. To keep make this simple, a massive building also means 'lots' of shipments, which will translate into lost and delayed packages. I just picked up my butcherbox from downstairs that had evidently arrived the day before. And amazon? They will tell you that you can pick up your packages in the locker for easy access, but this can (and most often times is) 1-3 days after it arrived and was finally placed in the system. Having something overnighted just to receive it days later because of the ineptitude from the very staff that is supposed to be 'assisting' you - beyond infuriating. But I digress... Internet. During your walk through the leasing agents will tell you that there is internet throughout the building and that they use it to work, so it is reliable - LIE. If you plan on working in the shared office spaces, you better have a hotspot. Not only does the internet work very sparingly, but it does not reach some of the rooms. Amenities. We fell for the trap. We saw the pool, the gym, and the rooftop and thought about how nice it would be to use them but neglected to realize that there are about 300+ residents also thinking the same thing. Needless to say, the amenities are too small to actually take advantage of because there are too many people trying to use them. Unprofessional staff. I cannot tell you the number of times we have either walked downstairs and come back from dinner just to find the staff either fast asleep, watching netflix or just chilling with their friends/family. And then they get mad when you actually try and ask for help as if you bothered them lol. Final Thoughts. If you do not care about your packages, getting good quality sleep, an unhelpful staff, and poor internet, this is the place for you! If you do, then for the love that is everything good, runaway and never look back. Yours truly, an soon to be former resident.

Leasing agents don’t do a great job assisting individuals interested in their apartments. They don’t follow up on calls when you leave a message and give out incorrect info about their vacancies often. I waited five days for a call back. I had to call back on my own. Also, was provided completely different info by two leasing agents. One said an apartment was available and the other said it wasn’t. Also don’t understand why they allow people to apply for apartments before they are even vacated.

Hi, we regret to hear that you had a negative experience with us, but would appreciate the chance to turn your experience around. Please give us a call during office hours.
I've been a resident at Union Place for several months. I really wish I loved this place - it would make the high price tag easier to swallow. Unfortunately, there have just been too many unresolved issues for me to look past. 1) The garbage chutes have electronic doors that often don't open. I would say at least twice a week they don't open. That means that residents put their garbage bags on the floors of the refuse rooms. Sometimes the stacks of garbage pile up high, resembling a dump. Over the weekend, the garbage might accumulate for a couple days, but if it's a weekday the garbage is usually cleared the next day (I feel awful for the cleaning team). 2) Sometimes the garbage chutes are completely full. Imagine this: opening the door to the garnage chute from an upper floor and seeing a column of garbage filling up the chute. 3) The TVs in the gym don't work. This is a big deal to me and something I specifically asked about when touring the building. I was told that because it was a new building the cable wasn't yet activated, but that it would be. Well ... it's been more than six months and the best they could do is add some sort of transmitter that provides very basic cable. Except it's pixelated to the point it's impossible to watch and the sound doesn't work on many of the machines. I need to watch national news in the morning for work and I'd hoped to be able to use that time to work out. Now I can't, which is unacceptable for the price we're paying. The basic amenities should work. 4) The elevators. Oh my gosh the elevators. So often they aren't working or they are reserved for moving. I get that people need to move in and out, but there needs to be more thought to how the elevators are booked. For example, if one of two elevators for the L Street entrance is broken, don't block the second one for moving. Because then the hundred or so residents who use that entrance don't have an elevator. Also the lights are shattered in some of the elevators and were left that way for months. 5) The roof. It has a gorgeous view. Indeed, it's one of the reasons I was initially sold on this building. But it isn't kept in good repair, which is really unfortunate. I love the location of the building, and the units are pretty. I'll likely be moving when my lease is up, though. Moving is never fun and I wish these issues could be resolved (quickly) so I could justify staying.
Drew (property manager) Teona (assistant manager) Derick (director) are all doing an awesome job and very responsive!! I owe a lot to the leasing office for making my transition to my new home a wonderful experience!! The staff is very like able, friendly, helpful and respectful and the building is beautiful! I would definitely recommend Union Place to my friends/family!!
I went to the very first open house. Zero organization, waited 45 minutes before I was finally taken on a group tour which amounted to the agent bringing us to the third floor and letting us just walk around on our own. Gave my contact info to do a private tour later, but never heard back. Second tour was another open house a couple of months later with my roommate. Also a group tour, but the leasing agent seemed tired and didn't want to be there (he said as much himself). Left my info again, but never received a call or email back. The leasing agent was so condescending and short any time we contacted them about tours or more info about applying after that. I guess it's bothersome or a burden on them when a prospective resident actually wants to apply. Can't imagine how other people who actually signed leases were/are treated. If this is the first impression they want to give about how the building is managed, then there is no point in living here.
I could talk about how beautiful Union Place is, and how great all of the amenities are (and they are - go see them for yourself!). As someone who has lived in new communities in DC in the past, what has really made Union Place stand apart is the management team, specifically Teona. Compared to my experiences with other management companies and 4 previous buildings in DC, Teona has left a strong positive impression of my first Toll Brothers community. She has gone above and beyond to address every question I had, always faster than expected, and is by far the most responsible, accessible, and helpful management staff I've interacted with in the city. She's made it very evident that we're going to have a great experience living here! :)
I recently just moved into to DC area for a job and was looking for my first place. Needless to say, I was not super knowledgable and was completely overwhelmed by all of the living options in DC. I had originally looked at Union Place and (after some ups and downs with potential roomies) decided to see the place for myself. I met with Teona who was absolutely phenomenal. She was patient, thorough, and detailed in everything. She was very considerate and attentive to my needs and budget, and made sure I was aware of every living option. She was very responsive to all of my emails and questions and even called me late at night to inform me that I had been approved to get the apartment I signed for. Due to my initial nomadic situation in DC, Teona pulled all the stops to make the process as quick, transparent, and efficient as possible. Obviously, Union Place is amazing (rooms, amenities, rock climbing wall, wine on tap, communal living space, location) but the staff really sold me. I am so excited to be moving in and feel like I am in good hands going forward.
I had an absolutely terrible experience with the leasing agent at this building's open house. The building itself looks beautiful and seemed like a great place to live, but after going on a tour where they clearly were not interested in renting to us I will not be moving here. The tour started out fine and we saw a model unit. When asked to see a two bedroom two bathroom unit advertised on the website, the leasing agent told us those apartments were out of the price range we had stated. Confused, I pulled up the listing on my phone (which was well within the price range we specified) and asked him about that type of unit. Suddenly he seemed to remember they existed and begrudgingly brought us to the unit. After the tour, I asked for a print out of the floor plan so I could compare with other buildings we toured that day, which is a VERY standard practice. I was told it would be emailed to me because they wanted to save paper (even though I was told the lease application could only be done on paper and not online), unsurprisingly I never got it. It was very clear he either did not want to rent to us specifically or did not want to rent the units they clearly are advertising on their website. Maybe they have less-desirable units they are trying to fill first? I'll never know, but I certainly will not be moving to this building.
