Property Ratings at University Apartments
If you like living with roaches, palmetto bugs, etc then this is the place for you. Exterminating only forces the bugs back into their hiding places, they return after about a week. This was never home, maintenance workers hang out behind the apartments on their phones instead of cleaning and making this a better to live. Roach motel, don’t believe the hype, the pictures only show the nice parts, and they have the nerve to charge a pest control fee and they are not controlled. I wonder does the office have roaches, maybe I can drop off a few.

After seeing availability on Apartments.com, actually calling the place to confirm availability, I scheduled a 12:00PM appointment to see a unit (Blair to be specific) on 5/17. On the day of visiting, we were told the only unit they had was being 'refurbished' and that they didn't have any available units. They still had a unit to look at, but after inspecting the apartment, while nice, was NOT the same original floorplan as the website. The person at the office said that the apartment had been 'renovated' and a second half bath was added, and that the price went up with it. They explained they had a call center rather than an actual representative to set this appointment up. So to keep a tally -The website availability was wrong. -The CALL CENTER telling me there was availibility was wrong -The floorplan layout was wrong -The Pricepoint was wrong (compared to both this website and the listed prices listed IN THE OFFICE. Now, overall, the apartment within IS NICE. I like the location and everything. But this runaround is not appreciated. I notice the property manager often responds to the reviews here, and I'd like to state I'm still INTERESTED in renting here, but this was NOT a great first impression of the office side of the equation.

Thank you for bringing your inquiry and tour experience to our attention. We are very glad to know you liked the apartment you saw and are interested in being a part of our community, but we are sorry we did not have available the floor plan you most wanted to tour. There are days when availability fluctuates rapidly, so it states on the listing that the information is subject to change. It is understandable that this situation you encountered would be disappointing, but we abide by fair housing laws and sometimes this results in a leased home and unavailability of a selected style. We would love to assist you in finding an alternative to suit your needs, so please call our office at (757) 461-5504 whenever you are interested in an availability update. We are eager to speak with you and turn around your impression of our wonderful community. Thank you again. -Claudia / Community Manager

My family and I moved here in 2009. Our experience has been above and beyond expectations. The Staff (Office and Mainteance) are very caring, respectful and efficient. The location is superb and convenient. The location is very sufficient for seasoned folks and families, pet friendly, on bus line, shopping centers and hospitals just to name a few where everything is within your reach.

I was so excited about coming to look at an apartment, as they seemed so together. I called and made an appointment for 10am. I started calling at 9:50am, but nobody picked up, despite there being someone in the office. At 10:14 I went to the door and there was a sign saying just to call and wait in your car, so I called again. I called the 844 number and selected that id not called before, just go get a person and told them what was going on. At 10:34 I went to the door again and knocked and the lady signaled to the phone and I waved mine at her, saying that I've been calling. I stood there for about 10 minutes in the rain, then when she answered the door, I explained that my brother and I had an appointment at 10 and have been calling since 9:50. She was unnecessarily rude and said, "Okay well, I'm the only one here today and I'm only one person, obviously we're busy." There was nobody in the lobby or anyone around. "And I don't even have you down. I have no appointments for 10 o'clock." My face fell into a disgusted expression and I just said, "wow." She then tried to ask me what kind of home I was looking for, but after an encounter like that, why would I want to rent there? So I said, "No," and walked away. That was an absolutely ridiculous experience.

I moved in Nov. 2015, I had some application issues but management took a chance with me. I never made a late payment in 5 years and went on to buy my own home. I did so love living there. Every possible need I had was met quickly and satisfactorily. The office manager never tired of my feedback and her office staff was always pleasant, engaging and knowledgeable. Any issues I had were met immediately. They even helped me with moving out. Caring, compassion, diligence and support are words that come to mind with the team here. It truly was my pleasure to live in a community that made me feel safe, secure and valued. Shame on you people who rated so poorly because you know its just not true. Remember you reap what you sew. You get out of it what you put into it. Hands down University Apartments is a great place to live.

There are hundreds of cockroaches in the apartment. The place is completely infested. Cockroaches coming out from ventilation outlets. The worst place.

First, the apartment I was shown was not rented to me. Secondly, plumbing is horrible. I have had water coming from my ceiling, water underneath my carpet, also mysterious pol of water in my bathroom. (Mind you, poor plumbing brings bugs, which I am scared of.) Third, ac went out.. notified maintenance to get it fixed, they didnt. I am single and living along having to pay a $200 dominion eergy bill each month from May-September. (just got my october bill after they FINALLY fixed it and it was only $45) Met with property manager and was not compensated. Of course I was not let out of my lease either. Do not recommend, straight ghetto. Only positives are the ladies in rental office are nice and no noise complaints.

We are sorry to hear that you are disappointed in the problems that arose in your home. According to our records, we did make repairs in a timely manner and to date, nothing is outstanding. It sounds like you now agree it is in working order, but please let us know if that is incorrect and we will make repairs immediately. Regarding the high power bill, we did offer you a credit for any overage possibly caused by the air conditioner. We determined the credit based on prior usage, but also taking into account the extreme heat during the time period covered by your bill. If you would like to discuss this matter further, please contact our office at (757) 461-5504. We are happy to help.
We ended up living below HORRIBLE neighbors. The ceilings squeaked like crazy whenever they walked (and stomped). They replaced the ceilings and added more support after our first complaint, but the issue still occured. It got to the point where we couldn't live a normal life because of the noises. The apartment itself isnt bad at all. Just depends who you get as neighbors and if the ceilings are supportive. Managment wasn't helpful at all when I kept complaining about the issue. I talked to the owners of the property and they we're helpful in finding a solution! The parking sucks if youre in the first set of buildings by the office. There are NOT enough visitor parking. The pool is somewhat far if you live on the other end of buildings (we have to drive there). We have only seen 5 cockroaches since living there and we've been there for 10 months. Maintence will come spray your apartment when you call about the "water bugs" which is really nice. Overall, the apartments arent horrible depending which one you get. I reccomend getting a second floor if possible!
IF YOU LIKE LIVING AMUNGST BUGS AND ROACHES DAILY, THEN MOVE HERE. IVE CALLED THE OFFICE MULTIPLE TIMES ABOUT THE BUG PROBLEM AND THEY DONT SEEM TO CARE. I DONT EVEN THINK THAT THESE PEOPLE WHO WORK HERE WOULD WANT TO LIVE HERE. IF YOU LOVE A DAILY BATTLE WITH ONE INCH COCROACHES THEN THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU.

When I first moved in it was very nice but the walls are way too thin When the neighbors would smoke you can smell it through the walls , when they argue you can hear them I mean you can hear and smell everything that goes on, on each side
Nice apartments for low prices, could use a little more lighting but other than that I have had no issues with the time I have lived at my apartment, thinking about renewing the lease.
