Property Ratings at University Gateway
First are the general complaints: the rooms look much nicer in the pictures than they do in reality. Living here is like living in a prison. The lighting is pretty bad and the walls and ceiling are basically just concrete. The garbage chute is clogged frequently and trash is just left on the floor of the garbage room. The elevators arent properly maintained. At any given time, at least one elevator is out of order. It is just not worth the price and I think the only reason they get away with it is because students live here for a bit, realize it sucks, but graduate soon after. Next, I had been trying to have some friends assigned to the same room as me for months. The communication has been bad and no one can give me a definite answer on it. I called over 10 times, emailed multiple people, and got told that I would get emails or calls back with information. I have received no information. When the roommate assignments came out, I had the wrong ones. Last, the maintenance team was awful for months. I had a broken dishwasher for over two months. The maintenance people would repeatedly come to 'look' at it, do nothing, turn it on, and leave, saying they would come back later. They never did, unless I submitted a new maintenance request.

I cannot tolerate that anymore. The cleaning people entered into our unit without any previous notification, and disturbed me terribly owing to the sounds of knocking the door. However, since I knew that there will be a new roommate moving into our unit, such situation is still acceptable to me. But!!! The cleaning people used my cleaning tools without my permission!!!!!!! That is totally offensive! Those are my personal prosperities!!! How can they use them without even asking me!!! After opening the door for them, I went to my bedroom to continue sleeping. I asked them whether they will clean the public place of our unit and they said no. That’s why I decided to go to sleep again. But they cheated me!! And they used my cleaning tools, which is totally invading my rights!! They even put the towel which I used to clean the floor on the table of our kitchen! That is so gross!!! How could they do that!!! They have their own cleaning tools! Why they use mine!!! And when they left, they didn’t turn off the lights in the living room!! I will be charged for electricity fees owing to such behavior!!! Terrible apartment management!!!!!! Totally offensive!!!!

No hot water. No internet. But there is always a screaming fire alarm at 3:00 am but nothing happened indeed. There is also ultra-high rent rate. If you have too much money don't know how to use and want to torment yourself, Gateway is the best choice for you.

Overpriced with extremely poor service... their management teams are too horrible. You won’t get anything fixed or your request fulfilled unless they are willing too. And you gonna “appreciate” when they do.

It take them more than a week to respond to my work order, and it's flooding in my apartment.

From the day I moved in in August of 2018, the air conditioning unit above my closet was leaking. My roommate and I retrieved a small glass bucket to catch the water while we filed a work order. Little did we know, the leaking air conditioning would be a problem for the duration of our lease and would impact me and my belongings. From August on, I filed many, many work orders and each time, the Gateway staff would claim that the air conditioning unit was "fixed." As you can guess, the unit was never actually fixed and would continue to leak from different parts of the unit, resulting in a wet carpet and my inability to open my closet as my closet was the one directly below the air conditioning. It was only months later when my father intervened and that my belongings became damaged that the ignorant staff took slight notice of the problem. However, don't begin to think that things became resolved from here. In November, I alerted the staff via email after filing probably over 20 service requests that the vent was still leaking, that there was clearly mold on my belongings, and a soaked floor barring my access to my closet. When I returned from Thanksgiving break, I came back to a mold damaged pair of expensive shoes and an equally moldy laundry bag. Even when I asked them to take Winter break to have professional carpet cleaners and a professional come to clean the vent, they did not take this opportunity to resolve their wrongdoings. And when a new piece of my belongings, a jacket, showed clear air conditioning leak related residue on it, the Gateway staff tried to tell me that it was unrelated to the mold on my laundry bag and $300 pair of shoes. Interesting, considering that I had worn it two days prior, put it back in my closet, and went to wear it and found it ruined. In true Gateway fashion, they used the difference in how the mold residue/air conditioning damage looked to justify only compensating me for one damaged item. The staff claimed that, given that they allegedly "fixed the A/C multiple times and cleaned the carpets" and that because "the residue on the shoes does not quite match with the residue on the jacket," they could not compensate me for the jacket... Gateway could not take the proper responsibility for its negligence. Given that I was stuck living in a crap hole for the rest of the semester, I purchased a clothing rack and emptied the closet of my belongings in order to protect my items from the leaky vent and burrowing mold.

Weekly fire alarms at inconvenient hours. Amenities always out of comission. Staff seems to show zero care for the blatant misfunction of this place. Please, please, avoid at all costs. This place is a scam

If you are an undergraduate or someone who has a second place to go when things go wrong, then this place is fine. If this is your primary residence and you don’t leave for vacations or school breaks often, stay away. This place is fine, but there’s always something wrong. My first year here was okay, couldn’t complain, but I regret resigning my lease. Either the water is turned off, the fire alarm is going off multiple times a day, bug infestations, or something is broken. I wouldn’t recommend this place but if you have nowhere else to go, it’s better than the street.

Lived here for a year. Worst living experience of my life. Bugs in apartment, amenities always out a service and overpriced charges when you move out. Fire alarms constantly went off and elevators were always broken down. Management is also impossible to get ahold of. Do not live here. There are many other options for the same price that are way nicer

One of the worst places to live, do not consider moving in! 1. Location The ONLY good thing about Gateway is that it is literally a block away from USC, so a fairly convenient location 2. Utilities When you walk into the leasing office, they'll tell you that they have excellent utilities- from free coffee, to free printing, to laundry rooms, the gyms, etc. But do not be fooled, because most of them don't work! -Yes, free coffee, but they rarely have cups (1 out of 5 times I go they do not have cups), so unless you remember to bring your own, you won't get coffee. -Free printing: Nah, the printers haven't worked in 3 months -Washing machines/ driers: The laundry room closest to me has 3 washing machines and 4 driers, but only 2 of each work. I put in a work request 3 times but it hasn't been fixed in over a year! -Free internet: Yes, free! But it cuts off every 5 minutes, and is SO slow that you can barely even load Netflix. When you are in need of fast internet (i.e. online interview, register for classes), I suggest you find somewhere else to do it 3. Services/ Offices/ Others -Mail Room: When I go get my packages, they usually just throw it at me. Clearly, very very nice staffs... NOT! -Fire alarm: The fire alarm goes off so often that the residents don't even take it seriously anymore. Just very very annoying in the middle of the night After all, a really bad place to live, and rent is super expensive consider what you're getting! If you don't believe me, read all the comments underneath, I think they agree with me.
