The neighborhood of Homewood takes its name from the historical museum located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University, which the neighborhood surrounds. Homewood Museum is a National Historic Landmark, built around 1800 by Charles Carroll, the longest-surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence -- he died in 1832 at the age of 95. Carroll was a US Senator for the state of Maryland from 1781 until 1800; he also helped establish the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
Because much of the neighborhood consists of the university, most of the apartment communities are located along the edges of the neighborhood, especially along University Parkway and Charles Street. In addition to the university and the museum, Homewood also contains Wyman Park, which contains part of the Stony Run Trail, the Space Telescope Science Institute, and Homewood Field, the university's sports stadium for the football, lacrosse, soccer, and field hockey teams.

Property Ratings at University West
University West is great place to live if you are looking for off campus housing at JHU! It is a newly renovated apartment complex that has central air conditioning, all new appliances, and friendly staff that are available to help whenever you need it! A lot of units also have in unit W/D, and even if you don't have an in unit, the laundry units are always available in the basement of the complex. The location is very safe and close to campus. Overall a great place to live!
The newly renovated apartments are very nice with brand new appliances and carpeted bedrooms. The rooms are great for students but can get a little cramped with the small living room/kitchen hybrid. Water is included and the water pressure in the showers and faucets is amazing. Overall had no issues with maintenance either. The security and package delivery systems are very convenient. The only con is that the place has leaky windows, which causes some drafts to enter and dramatically raises your electricity bill since you pay for heat. This may be my unit though. Overall, I would recommend University West to any students looking for affordable off-campus housing.
This is a great building if you like a vintage feel. 106 was built in 1920 and 104 was built in 1918, and some of the original elements--including the inlaid wood floors--have been left in. The kitchens have been renovated and are larger than those in most of the apartments close to campus. It feels very homey where newer buildings tend to feel institutional. You do not have a gym or common room, but many residents are students or faculty and have access to the Hopkins fitness center that is directly across the street. The building is dog friendly, which is a bit hard to come by in this neighborhood. It is right by the Hopkins lacrosse stadium, so it is an easy walk or bike ride to campus. It is also close to the bus stop, a few cafes, and a convenience store. The surrounding neighborhood is nice to talk walks in and feels safe. The location is pretty ideal for a Hopkins student or employee. With old buildings, you can expect a few maintenance issues every so often. These sorts of things are hard to prevent or predict, but the maintenance team has responded to any request, however small, quickly and efficiently. The community is relatively small and quiet, and service is very personal. I have enjoyed living here and would recommend it to others.
