As one of Richmond's oldest neighborhoods, Shockoe Valley dates back to 1737 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Shockoe Valley contains several smaller neighborhoods, including Upper Shockoe Valley. Upper Shockoe Valley begins along East Broad Street, directly north of Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom. It borders the MCV Campus Virginia Commonwealth University and I-95 on its east side, with North 18th Street to the west. The Virginia State Capitol is adjacent to the neighborhood, just south of Broad Street.
Being on the east side of Downtown Richmond, Upper Shockoe Valley apartments are often within walking distance of all things downtown, including the Richmond Coliseum, the Greater Richmond Convention Center, the Dominion Arts Center, and the National. Within the neighborhood, you'll find shops and restaurants along 18th Street, including Shockoe Valley Market and the popular Shockoe Valley Pizza & Bar.

Property Ratings at Vida East
Please be aware of what you are moving into. Elevators break constantly as well as the garage doors. They have recently put in new systems at the door and that has been broken for weeks. My mother is a resident there and is moving out because of a roach issue. After knowing about the issues for 2 months they have had a professional come in only once. Multiple treatments are needed but they are not doing that. Their solution is placing sticky traps around the apartment. We have had to purchase our own spray and have sprayed for weeks with nothing. There are a few thousand dollars of belongings that we can't take to a new apartment because of the lack of response.
My car has been broken into three times while in the parking garage. Packages have been stolen. Bonadventure is the worst management company.
Do not move here, car has been broken into 3 times this month and i pay for 2 cars to be in that awful garage for nothing. management does nothing about any issue you have.
As someone who has lived here for almost 2, and have seen the change of hands in management I would highly recommend looking elsewhere. I am speaking as a concerned resident who wants change. Since 2023 multiple cars have been literally broken into while parked in the parking garage we pay for monthly. Personal property stolen. People running down the halls and kicking/banging on doors. Elevator broken for over 6 months. 2am fire alarm going off with no explanation the following days/weeks to come. Overall, no relevant/consistent communication on these serious, relevant, safety issues from our property managers. No actions have been taken to stop/prevent these incidents. We call the nonemergency number for the police (per the advice of management) and unsurprisingly they’re very familiar with Vida East. Please consider/prioritize your own personal safety before committing to a place like this.
Everything seems nice at first, but if you have a problem with your unit, maintenance will gaslight you and try to make you believe there is no problem. Managers on site are nice, but corporate will not answer your calls or call you back if you leave messages. It cost $100 extra a month for garage parking, yet the garage door has been broken for months. The garage door remains open, unable to shut, allowing anyone to walk in and have access to your car. It even got stuck with the garage door down once preventing tenants from being able to leave. They took away the cable that was included in the rent but did not decrease the rent. Seems like they like to take tenants' money and do the absolute bare minimum for the tenants.
This is a brand new apartment complex in a great location - walking distance to Shockoe Bottom and there are still apartments that have yet to be lived in! As people who have looked at dozens of apartment complexes in the past 2 years (military moves, am I right?), let me just say that our experience at Vida East was beyond our wildest expectations from start to finish. After a frankly disappointing apartment hunt up until that point, we walked into the lobby of Vida East after seeing their leasing sign on the building. We didn't have extremely high hopes after our earlier experiences around Richmond, but as soon as we walked in it was like a weight off of our shoulders. Magda really sold the place for us! She immediately greeted us with kindness and enthusiasm. She told us all about the area and the property amenities and gave us a ton of info about the available apartments. We walked them, toured the rest of the complex, and decided right then that this would be our new home. When we sat down to fill out our applications, Magda could tell we were deliberating over the apartment we wanted, and she went above and beyond - she offered to take us to see each apartment a second time, even showing us the exact unit we would be renting (which was an awesome surprise), AND when we mentioned we would be downsizing from a house to an apartment she let us see her own apartment so we could get some ideas of what to do with the space!! By far, Magda stole the show and we are so looking forward to working with her. After some technical difficulties filling out the online application, we got to meet Laura, who did such a great job at putting our minds at ease and welcoming us to the community. All of her communications were prompt and delivered as promised, which was super helpful since we were on a time crunch! We also got to speak with Anna several times with questions about the lease or apartment in general. In fact, we forgot to get a floorplan of our apartment, but we reached out to Anna who offered to send us a video of the unit! She had that emailed to us later that afternoon. We genuinely cannot wait to be a part of this residential community. They also offer flexible lease terms! Most utilities are included or payable with your rent, so you don't have to worry about a ton of different bills, and they do offer the option of paid, private parking in a gated underground garage (pay for a space in a shared but secure underground garage).
Super beautiful and modern. The staff is really friendly and you can't beat the view from the roof!
