With its cobblestone streets and historic architecture, Downtown Lake Orion is about as picturesque and charming as a downtown could be. Add the fact that it sits along the lake and has beautiful views, and it's no wonder that residents rarely move away. The village dates back to the early 1800s, when it was named Canandaigua, after the first settlers' home in New York. The name was changed to Lake Orion in 1835, and the lake was soon renamed (from Lake Canandaigua) as well.

Beware of the dragon … well, not really, but you will see a lot of dragons in Downtown Lake Orion -- especially during the Dragon on the Lake Festival. The dragon legend dates back to 1894, when a group of residents living along the lake claimed to be terrorized by an enormous, 80-foot-long "dragon" that lived in the lake. The festival, which is held in August, includes live music, art, wine and craft beer tasting, and dragon boat races.
