West Ashley sits within the city of Charleston and is west of the Ashley River, hence its name, and is the birthplace of Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Darius Rucker. Lined with mossy oaks, the Ashley and Stono Rivers border West Ashley, creating the breathtaking scenery for which Charleston is known. West Ashley residents enjoy close proximity to the area's only indoor mall, the Citadel Mall, and a large number of big-box stores.
Situated seven miles due west of Downtown Charleston, residents can plan on a 15- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic, to take in all downtown has to offer. Nearby Interstate 526, which feeds directly into Charleston’s Interstate Highway 26, gives residents a fast and easy route in and out of area. Mid- to late-1900s ranch-style homes characterize the housing in outer West Ashley, but neighborhoods built in the 2000s also sprinkle the area.

Property Ratings at Village Square
This apartment complex has absolute horrible customer service and care for its tenants. For a year I leased and apartment there and month after month I complained about bugs being a problem even after trying to fight them off myself they never made any effort to fix situation. During pandemic they forced every to pay online due to social distancing while at the same time charging a 3 dollar fee for paying online and at the same time 50% of our amenities were cutoff. I was warned about this place before I moved in but you don’t realize how bad it is til your there. I would never recommend this place to anyone!
I lived here for 8 months before deciding I had to get out. The units are not well maintained, the first floor apartments are EXTREMELY musty (I had to redo my dry cleaning every month), there are roaches literally everywhere inside and out and pest control only makes it so that there are dead roaches everywhere, management is awful, and i’ve witness several instances of violence between my neighbors. Avoid this place at all costs.
Avoid Village Square properties at all costs. Apartments are not well maintained, no screening process for tenants, demand a walk through with staff upon moving in to avoid any charges after end of lease. They will try to charge you for every little thing, even normal wear and tear, upon leaving their property and the amounts they charge for repairs and damages are way too high. Office staff was often uncooperative, difficult to communicate with, and unorganized (they did not have my lease for me to sign until after living there for a month already). Worst place I have ever lived by far, completely unprofessional and management is not willing to address these problems.
I've lived here for over a year and love the West Ashley location. As time has worn on however I've had to really press management for basic needs like parking enforcement and it's been a really rough go-round. Just getting management to call me back or reply to my e-mailed concerns has been fruitless. In the past I've had to show up to the office, hoping for a clear response, but even then the property manager, Kathy, will totally avoid you or shoot you down. Her usual response to anything is 'the owners at Nirenblatt Nirenblatt Hoffman said such and such and there's nothing you can do'. Super helpful. If you're looking for management that respects your signed lease agreement, your general livability, won't hang up on you, and is respectfully responsive, I would not bother living here. I borderline recommend this place to friends and coworkers but with a list of caveats. Again, it's not the worst, it's relatively affordable, and has some nice amenities but you might find better elsewhere if property management is important to you.
The only thing this place has going for it, is the location. The staff doesn't care if you don't have hot water or a working microwave. They can't even keep a working drop box for those that work late and can't drop off rent during business hours. Also, communication to maintenance staff is a joke. Different people will show up unannounced about a request made 2-3 days prior. Nothing is ever done in the same day. Also, apparently if you have a trailer, boat, or even a small RV, you can park it in the lot even if you don't live here. But beware, if you have a motorcycle, it will get stolen! Don't keep anything of value out in the open, because people will steal packages off your front porch. The office doesn't really care about their tenants, just their ever-increasing rent they get from those that struggle to make ends meet.
I lived in these apartments for only 8 months. Not only were they unclean and infested with termites, everything was unkept and the "maintenance" that they do is just an excuse to enter your apartment unannounced. They'll knock once then just let themselves in. The walls and doors literally fall apart and when you try to complain they said they won't do anything and List complaints they have against YOU! It makes no sense and they're only concerned about their money. They put NOTHING into the place then raise rent. Don't be stupid, choose a different complex please
Avoid this place like the plague. They act all nice one day and say everything is in order for your move-in, then the same week that you're supposed to move in they've leased the apartment they promised to you to someone else and the apartment available to you doesn't have everything specified in your lease. SCAM, find yourself somewhere else to live with office workers and property managers who aren't running a game. Nothing they say or put in writing can be trusted. They do not stand by their word or terms of agreement. Office managers, property managers all of them are the grimiest, sleaziest women you will ever encounter. They are unprofessional and should have no place in customer service. Find a place managed by decent people.
