DC-area commuters love Arlington’s Ballston/Virginia Square community for its close proximity to Washington and its relaxed neighborhood atmosphere. The rental market ranges from charming single-family homes on tree-lined suburban streets to high-rise apartments and condos in the thick of Arlington’s urban action, attracting a healthy mix of residents to the area.
While the neighborhood is mostly residential, the area between Fairfax Drive and Wilson Boulevard is packed with office buildings, shops, and restaurants; this is also where you’ll find the popular Wellburn Square Freshfarm Market, a local favorite for fresh produce, as well as the stylish Ballston Common Mall.
Most of the streets in the area are fairly quiet, giving folks the ability to get around on foot or by bicycle. The community provides easy access to Interstate 66, which will get you into DC within minutes; multiple Metro stops in the neighborhood also help make commuting a breeze.

Property Ratings at Virginia Square
Very nice staff and a nice apartment building, however I don’t see myself renewing here. Big complaint is that the walls and ceilings are very thin. I can hear the chairs being pulled out from the table in the apartment above me and my neighbor on the side of me can hear my tv even when it’s on relatively low sound. Neighbor literally slams the wall to lower the volume at 11pm.
Everything here over 2 years was pretty fine. Nothing to rave about, basically what you would expect as standard for an apartment complex at that price. I'd give them a 3-4 stars if it were not for the fact that once they find out you are moving out(after their yearly large rent increase), they hit you over the head on the way out with every charge and fine they can come up with. I had maids come clean my place bi-weekly and kept it basically immaculate for my whole time there, yet got charged for carpet cleaning, wall paint (i had neatly hung up two pictures with a standard small screw), all in addition to the ridiculous move out cleaning fee i already had paid preemptively. Complete nickel and dime-ing joke i'm so glad i never have to deal with blowing away money by renting from a petty place like this again.
Virginia Square Apartments is just not worth it. Save yourself the money and heartache of living in this place. I have been living here for the past year and to put it gently, it's been terrible. There has been construction nearly every day since I've moved in with no form of compensation for the residents that are currently living through the noise and scent of construction other than a rent hike for the next year's lease. I've gotten out of my elevator, only to find tape running through my hallway and planks scattered all around the floor. They barely made any upgrades to the gym and the club room (other than making it look "new") even though they went over the estimated construction time for months. And the kicker-- they made all the residents go through the trash room for months while entering and exiting the building while doing the construction in the lobby. There's nothing better than the smell of trash in the morning or after a long day of work. Moreover, they've become increasingly stingy (e.g. starting to charge guests for using the pool and requiring residents to have a "pool pass", running out of food 10 minutes into an "apartment-wide" celebration for living through the construction-- just goes to show how much they actually care about the residents). Also, the walls are extremely thin and if you get unfortunate with your neighbors they can be either extremely loud or paranoid. I've gotten noise complaints about my room even when neither my roommate nor I was in the room and can hear the music playing out of my neighbors room across the hall. Also they will tack on late fees even if they have a record of you logging in to pay the rent. Their online system sucks and they will penalize you for it.
This place is right on top of the metro, so that's amazing. Almost everyone in the building has a dog and is pretty friendly. A few of the older residents will complain about noise from the gym or parties, but overall it's not bad. Very well insulated and noise from the street isn't a problem.
We've been moved in to our new apartment for about 2 months now and love it. We are 2 blocks from the grocery store, maybe a few feet from the metro station entrance, and we live right above a dry cleaners, cafe, and a Starbucks. Can't get much better than that! Our apartment is fully upgraded with stainless steel appliances and a gas stove/oven. The leasing office and front desk are always nice and helpful. We are so glad we moved in!
This building is conveniently located directly above the metro, which allows quick and easy service into Washington, DC. The surrounding area is a great destination for delicious restaurants, outdoor parks, and exciting night life. The apartment itself is very spacious. The community has a gym available to all tenants and a roof-top pool/lounging area complete with multiple sitting areas and barbecues, along with spectacular views of the city. The community staff is extremely helpful and only contributes more to the incredible experience of living in this building.
Sitting on top of the Virginia Square Metro is the often overlooked little neighborhood between the trendier Ballston and Clarendon neighborhoods. It's within walking distance of all the great Ballston and Clarendon clubs, restaurants and shops, but enough out of the way that you're not listening to drunk kids scream at 2am. The building itself is nicely upgraded- hardwood floors, stainless steel, brushed nickel, granite, the works. The 24 hour concierge service can't be beat, maintenance is responsive and there couldn't be a dog friendlier building.
