Property Ratings at Vista Heights Apartments
Nice location and apartment. However, it was hard not to feel taken advantage of with the added fees throughout the 3 years of living there. Leasing office workers came off greedy by putting a lot of pressure to sign a lease 6 months in advance, and pressuring tenants to move out before their lease is up. After years of loyalty, they refused to work with me for a special request that they had granted to others in the past. Apartment was quality, although large cracks formed in the walls due to foundational issues which was alarming. Maintenance was very kind and prompt to fix any issues with the apartment.
I have lived at Vista Heights for a few years now while attending Truman. The Vista Heights team and Heritage House Rentals have been more than accommodating! They let me have my pet and the fee for the pet rent is more than reasonable and there is a lot of room on the complex to take him for walks. I am now moving on to the city after graduation, but thought I would write a review after seeing the reviews on here. I'm glad I didn't see any negative reviews of this place before renting it because my experience has been great. Despite the previous comments on here, they have only showed my apartment a couple times and they now have it rented for after my lease ends. Derek the maintenance man was so quick to come when my hot water heater quick working. He couldn't fix the part that was broke, but he had a new one installed before I got home from my classes for the day! I would recommend Vista Heights to future students.
It's a decent apartment. A few things though... during their busy season, they have people CONSTANTLY coming to tour your apartment. One week we literally had 6 people come to look at it. It got to the point to where it felt invasive and like you couldn't say no. They would say things like, "We really need to show an apartment... if we can't show yours, then we'll have to find someone else." It's like they sort of guilt tripped you into saying yes. I wouldn't mind, but I think they should have people sign up to do it and get a break on their rent. It just makes a lot more sense that way. Another thing: we had a bed bug infestation, and they were pretty accusatory. The first thing that was said was "Where did you bring them in from?" as if there was no other way they could've been inside the apartment. They also said it was my responsibility to pay the $1000 for the treatment. The office staff are kind until you do something that they don't like (even if it's small or trivial) and will make it something you're paying for and that is your fault. I will not be living here again.
I lived at Vista Heights during my last year spent studying at Truman State University. The experience was awful for the following reasons: 1) An 'exterminator' came by unannounced 3 times over the course of a year. He sprayed unknown chemicals over the apartment and my only clue that he had even been there was a creepy note left on my bathroom mirror. My main concerns about this were 1) The health of my pet and 2) My safety and privacy. 2) Vista Heights repeatedly charged me late fees on checks that had already cleared my account, even before the due date. 3) I was moved into an apartment that was disgustingly dirty (i.e. sticky cabinets, moldy smell, crumbs and debris in the kitchen area). After I had moved away, I was charged for invisible carpet damage in a strongly worded letter threatening legal action against me. 4) Staff was extremely uncooperative about the above issues. A few days prior to the end of my lease, a man in a white truck, whom I had never met before, drove by me and yelled, "When are y'all leaving?" I had never met this man before and he worked for Vista Heights All of these issues were made worse by the fact that I was as student and worked at the time of renting. I did not have time to be fussing with unprofessional staff and fighting with them. They know this and its why they feel comfortable making your experience as miserable as possible. If you are a student, stay away from these place. It is not worth your time and could be a distraction to your studies.
