Property Ratings at West Village
I want to share my experience of living here for the past two months so that future residents can make a more informed decision before touring or leasing here. Overall so far, I have had a negative experience. The positives of living here are the location, industrial look of the buildings, and Patrick and his maintenance team. Location is unmatched, and if you love old warehouse buildings with character and charm this is the place for you. Patrick and his team were courteous, attentive, and responsive when management would finally communicate to him. My experience though started off negative. My apartment was not turned over properly and move-in ready by my move-in date. I also have not had access to my patio gate for nearly two months. Part of that time was due to the property not fixing the patio gate's broken handle for nearly three weeks despite a work order request being put in immediately. It is the only exit from the backside of my apartment and the patio. In the event of an emergency, if that patio gate was my only option for an exit, I wouldn't have been able to get to safety due to it being inoperable. My only other option would have been to jump over the patio rails, and my patio is several feet above ground level. I thought this would be a safety issue and likely liability to the property, but the response I received from the regional manager was that patios are not a safety requirement onsite. I'm unsure then who would be held responsible if I were to suffer an injury during an emergency because I couldn't properly exit my patio. Communication and follow up is also not a strength of this property. I was told that due to the size of the community and urgency of requests that are submitted, there may be a delay in responses to emails. If there is a delay, the regional manger suggested that I either call or place a work order request as a follow up. However, my follow ups were for the work order requests I had placed. The leadership, including the regional manager, would like to work with me on these concerns, so I am hopeful. This place has the potential to be awesome, but not with the current management. As of now, I can't confidently recommend to live here.
AVOID THIS PLACE! We lived here for a year and our time was riddled with issues: 1) When we moved in our unit had a non-functioning dishwasher and it took 2 months to get a functioning one. 2) For multiple months we had issues with our bill with erroneous charges that took weeks to resolve and was a massive hassle. 3) Trash system is super inconvenient and sometimes the trash was not even picked up so to avoid fines for leaving trash out we’d have to use the outside skips that were just overflowing trash into the street for days 4) We had a broken AC system for most of the summer in 95+ degree heat and took us a 1.5+ months to get a new unit. 5) just in general it took way too long for maintenance to address requests (we’re talking 2+ weeks for the most simple requests) 6) we had termites in our ceiling that just began raining down on us 7) the complex has two pools and one of them didn’t even open the entire year (and that was in the newer part of the complex) despite promises it would be open. 8) it was only when our mover came to move our stuff in the apartment and he pointed it out that we found there was black mold under every window (which would always leak into the apartment on rainy days)
Generally a mediocre apartment complex with the benefit of a great location and the detriment of a completely inattentive and incompetent staff. Amenities aren't great but are fine, maintenance responsiveness is so-so, cost isn't amazing but not terrible for the location. However, the leasing office either doesn't know how to or just refuses to do their jobs. We have never received a useful answer from them (if we receive an answer at all) when calling or emailing them, and the office is only open in person from like 10am-4pm, and not during lunch, so you have to take time off work to talk to them, and even then they don't know what they're doing enough to help. All of these reviews on here that specifically mention how helpful a specific person was are very clearly fake reviews left by West Village to bump up their rating. They all sound exactly the same and they're clearly corporate jargon.
I have been trying to contact them for 6 weeks —- I had two virtual tours scheduled…both of which never happened because the agent never followed up with a link to do the tour. When I reached out, I got zero response. I figured I would try to start fresh and re-enter my information —-bad mistake. Since then, I get two emails per day saying “someone will reach out soon!” but no one ever does! I have since been calling to try to remove myself from the list because I’m obviously not going to live somewhere with such terrible communication. But I can’t even do that! The front desk people have no idea what to do. They also don’t give any information about their managers. I’ve tried calling the managers but they are never working! There was one time I got a hold of someone; she was very apologetic and I felt I could rely on her. She “set up” a virtual tour for me for the next day and said the assistant manager Stephanie would reach out later that day. Never happened and therefore of course the tour never happened. I called back another day asking for Stephanie — I was told she would email me Info within 45 min. Again…never happened. I’m sorry - I know everyone is busy but we are too! I can’t keep calling every hour to catch you at work — if you guys even do that?? I’m a physician and I still find time to call the people I promise I’ll call. Please get your act together. And remove me from your email list. Thanks
None of these photos they're displaying are accurate. This place is falling apart. The staff is generally incompetent and overworked. A majority of the key cards stopped working, so you can't get access to the parking garage or mailroom. Speaking of the mailroom - what a disaster. Stolen or lost packages consistently. Maintenance does not let you know when they're coming or going. This is unsafe. I'm currently a resident and would love to break my lease.
I echo the recent reviewers who say that this property is a complete nightmare. The staff could truly not care less about the wellbeing of their residents, and it's a sentiment that comes from top (the new property manager, Erica. There truly isn't enough room to talk about Erica here). Trash - which is an eye-watering $75/month - is a complete and total disaster, and truly revolting. Trash days are regularly missed and hallways smell terrible. Not to mention you will have to schlep your recycling and boxes to a faraway dumpster in a parking lot! What a great use of your $75! General sanitary conditions across the property are gross, and packages are another joke of a service. The mailroom - there is only one for this enormous property - is like a bomb went off inside, with carriers throwing packages at random so that any time you receive anything, you have to hunt for it in the hopes you might find it. More often than not, you won't. You're also obligated to pay $129/mth for Spectrum internet and cable, which is absurd in 2021 and yet another example of the complete and total disregard management has for residents' needs. In short, you can't find any residents who live here who have anything positive to say other than the location downtown is nice. Please do not live here under any circumstances- it is not worth the money despite its location and you will absolutely regret your decision the minute you move in. I cannot stress enough how terrible management is to deal with.
I cannot stress this enough - don’t live here! The walls are paper thin. The trash situation is a disaster. Management does not care at all and will do nothing but give you the runaround. Just don’t do it.
Cannot stress how awful living conditions have become here. The amount of trash throughout the property is overwhelming. The stench of decaying trashing inside and outside the buildings is all too common. Despite paying $45 for a valet trash service, management has ended the contract with the private company responsible for trash management and now relies on their underpaid and overworked maintenance staff to take care of the problem. The result is that trash builds up inside and outside the buildings. Every weekend trash is piled sky-high inside the buildings on each floor as the trash cute is either backed up from not taking out the dumpster or has never been replaced. There is broken glass everywhere outside. This is the furthest thing from luxury living. The city of Durham has been alerted, which fixed the situation for a week to get them off their back, but quickly got worse. It's sad as these historic buildings have so much potential, but are managed beyond poorly.
I wouldn't recommend this apartment complex to anyone. We were lied to on multiple counts throughout the process of finding our apartment. When we weren't being lied to we were being strung along by a list of promises that were outrageously inflated compared to what we encountered upon move in. We corresponded with Cortney from leasing throughout the process. Being that we were moving down from NY we took a facetime tour of the apartment. We were specific about asking about our apartment's view and the traffic outside of our windows. We were told we'd be getting a courtyard side apartment with view of a dog park - little to no foot traffic. (Lie #1) We were also told that we'd be able to view the apartment in person prior to signing the lease. (Lie #2) We drove down from NY specifically to view the appt only to be told that we would not be able to see the apartment in person afterall as someone was occupying it. Given that we'd already given up our lease in NY we were strapped and signed the lease at West Village without being able to see it. We arrived on move in day to find that our courtyard side appt was a parking lot side apartment with direct view of parking spots that pull right up to our living room and kitchen windows throughout all hours of the day. We were quoted a variety of ceiling heights ranging from 16'-22' throughout the process. (Lie #3) That being said I bought my home work equipment for ceilings over 12ft. Come to find out that our ceilings are actually 12ft and I had wasted $1,000 on equipment and had to repurchase. Again we would have been able to measure the ceilings, and avoid this mistake, had we been able to view the apartment in person as we were promised. But of course, that was a lie. We met with leasing and management multiple times to have this situation rectified and we were gaslit throughout each meeting. The Connor Group (who owns West Village) has also refused on multiple occasions to do anything to rectify this mess. Lastly I'd like to talk about the garbage situation in West Village. There is valet service for our trash that happens Mon, Wed, and Fri. There is no trash chute or dumpster to put our trash in on any other days. So If you move here try not to cook or create any garbage on Fridays otherwise it will be sitting in your apartment over the entire weekend. I will stop here because I could go on and on about this. Please don't move here. We will be relocating as soon as we are able to.
what a friendly and wonderful staff while apartment shopping and viewing the place. But as soon as you sign the lease you get no time at all from them. I am writing this review at 1:45 am Wednesday night/Thursday morning after 3 of the same exact nights prior to this. There is a mice party going on in my apartment and I have gotten the run around the entire week. I thought I finally got some sympathy from Carrie today and was told that both terminix and maintenance would be here today but sadly the mice are enjoying the apartment much much more than I am. This is an amazing looking place but you do not get any kindness from staff once you are here. Less than 7 months left and I am counting down every minute.
Although my husband and I are picky apartment shoppers, Stephanie was patient with us throughout the process. She took extra time to help us find the right fit without being pushy. We're so excited about moving to our new place!
Great experience so far! Quick move in, beautiful complex, and great service! Melissa made it a breeze!
West Village is a great apartment complex in a great location! The apartments are stunning and I love the old warehouse feel to them. Stephanie in the leasing office has been very helpful and has answered all my questions in a timely manner! Great place!
Great spot to be in Durham! Wonderful loft apartments! Excellent renter support from the leasing office, with special kudos to Stephanie! Highly recommended place to live!!
Great apartment at a reasonable price. Service requests via Carrie are always prompt. Our A/C was down for a day last week and a service tech came out the within 24 hours to fix it. I have had other service requests resolved in an equally efficient fashion. Would definitely recommend.
Beautiful space, friendly staff, and the perfect location. I can walk everywhere I need to go (unheard of in NC)! So happy to have found West Village. Cortney from the leasing office was specifically such a huge help to us during the signing of our lease and move-in.
I'm upset I even have to give 1 star - this place deserves 0 stars. Here are the reasons West Village is a terrible place to live: - It is unsafe. There have been five car break-ins in the West Village garage in the past five days and West Village has done nothing. There are no security guards, no police stationed in the area, nothing. - The window of my apartment shattered due to a gas explosion. It took West Village 6 months to replace the window. - The plumbing in my apartment catastrophically failed and it took them several days to fix it. - The facilities are atrocious. Mice have been in my apartment since I moved in. There is always construction and noise. Something is always broken, from the gates on the garage to the doors on the buildings. - West Village tried to raise my rent this year and I said no, they came back and offered to keep my rent flat, I accepted, they said the offer had expired and tried to raise my rent again. Very unprofessional. So - I am moving out of West Village! I would advise anyone considering West Village to look elsewhere.
It seems like it is company policy to treat their tenants like garbage. Speaking of garbage, even though it costs over $40 a month for a mandatory valet trash fee, the only way to recycle is in a single dumpster in a parking lot that is used by every building in the complex. This dumpster is constantly surrounded by recycling and trash pretty much everyday. They will be nice to you when you come in to looks and apartments then pressure you all through the lease signing process and then pretend you don't exist if you ever have a question or request of them. Another tenet told the office he left them a negative review to which the office responded, "I guess there's nothing we can do for you now, then" (which is illegal by the way). I can't say strongly enough how much you should not live here.
great communication & overall service from the leasing office ( special shoutout to Kelsey )
Tomi at West Village was a delight to work with! She was attentive to myself and my partner's needs in a new home and did a wonderful job selecting apartments for us to view that fit our qualifications. Tomi was personable, accommodating and very knowledgable about the community. I look forward to making West Village my new home!
Carrie Lewis was exceptional! She really helped me find a great space in such a short amount of time. I love the area and my new space. I highly recommend checking out West Village.
Cortney was extremely helpful and answered all of my questions when I was touring West Village and filling out all of the leasing paperwork. The location is great and the unit was very clean when I moved in.
The representatives at West village were great! Courtney and the others really made sure I was already to go and were very timely with any responses to questions and issues I had. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a place!!
Great experience here so far. From the beginning of the process, working with Tomi was excellent as she showed us different apartments to fit our needs. The neighborhood has that authentic downtown vibe and is within walking distance to several places to visit. Would highly recommend
Staff was nothing but friendly as we moved in and incredibly patient with processing our paperwork. The apartments themselves are gorgeous and they have an impressive price range. Great area to live in as well, I see dogs every time I enter or exit my apartment.
Just moved in to this apartment at the end of November. So far it’s pretty nice, exactly what you want from a warehouse style apartment. I think it’s a little too expensive (especially when you have to pay to use the washer/dryer) but overall I’m impressed. The management team has also been pretty helpful in terms of moving in and answering any questions I have.
Landis was a huge help in getting me set up to move into West Village. She was very kind and answered all my questions and did her absolute best to make the move in as easy as possible. Overall management is a little unorganized but a good experience.
Nadine and the front office staff are wonderful and beyond proficient! Service request are always done in a timely manner (24 hours).
My apartment at West Village is beautiful! It is in an old tobacco factory that was built in 1898 and has tall ceilings, a giant window that lets in tons of natural light, hardwood floors and old exposed brick. The location is awesome too, you are within walking distance of dozens of cool bars and restaurants (the best spots that downtown Durham has to offer). Nadine and the rest of the staff at West Village have also been very helpful, with not only the move in process, but also getting any maintenance issues taken care of quickly. One of the few issues is that you will probably hear your neighbors, from either above or below you. I suppose either the ceilings or walls aren't that thick. So you may need earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
My boyfriend and I have lived here for 7 months now and have truly enjoyed the community! When we first moved in, we were pleasantly surprised by the upgraded appliances that had been installed the week prior at no extra cost. Our neighbors (both furry and human) have been incredibly friendly. It's also super convenient having Ramblers (neighborhood bar/bottle shop) just across the street as a nice gathering space. Maintenance has been quick to respond to all of our needs, so two thumbs up! Christina has been especially helpful in answering questions and providing clear correspondence about future projects/exciting additions to the community. We are happily extending our lease for next year!
We recently were considering a move to North Carolina and visited in August to look at apartments, we visited a few but didn’t sign any leases. It wasn’t until we returned home that we came across West Village Durham. We reached out for more information and Courtney contacted us in a matter of a few hours. She was FANTASTIC!! We not only were in another state but different time zones. She took the time to call us even though it was so close to her quitting time because we couldn’t chat until after 5pm central time and made sure she answered all our questions. She text us virtual walk throughs of apartment layouts since we couldn’t be there in person. Courtney went above and beyond making sure all our needs and wants were heard. She matched us with the perfect apartment that we now get to call home. Courtney made choosing a future home in an unknown state super easy. The location is very walkable and our new home is super dog friendly which our fur baby appreciates. I’m so glad we were able to work with Courtney and the staff at West Village Durham and even more pleased we now get to call it home.
Cortney at West Village is beyond amazing. She worked with me through the sale of my house and relocation to Durham, NC. The whole staff is willing to assist, they were patient and always very helpful. I love West Village and am so excited for it to be my new home!
Just moved in. The staff in the leasing office is great and super helpful. Cortney and Taylor made the process smooth for me. The community is full of amenities and in a great downtown location. i definitely would recommend West Village to anyone.
West Village Office staff has assisted me well during my booking the apartment. I moved in from New Jersey, they schedule a Video call tour to give a good view of apartment and so does the surrounding. They were very prompt at responding to any queries i had. Apartments are very huge and well equipped.
Great location and beautiful space. Cortney has been wonderful and so helpful with all of our questions.
I just moved into West Village a couple weeks ago and Cortney has done a great job from start to finish. She was very helpful throughout the application process, and search for my ideal apartment.
Just moved here. Love it! The staff are friendly and get back to you on questions within a reasonable time. The apartment is great. Good location. Lots of nice amenities.
We had to move quickly and the staff at West Village walked through the options and helped us find the best choice.
When I moved to Durham, I was super hurried to find an apartment before my work started! They were able to find me a great spot quickly and in an awesome location.
Moved to the area with after finding a new job. Courtney and Katelyn were a tremendous help. So far a great area to live and good services from management.
My roommate and I are having a great time here. It's close to everything with nice amenities, and Katelyn and Cortney were super helpful throughout the leasing process!
West Village is exactly what we needed to make our move to Durham extremely pleasant! Cortney especially understood what we were looking for straight away and helped us to chose the best apartment for us from a distance. The space is indeed great! We have large bedrooms at the two sides of the apartment - that helps our privacy - and a lovely living space to share. The administration for the leasing was simple and very smooth. All the staff promptly responds to any queries and is always available to help you to find your feet about local life here too! We love it here!
I have had a wonderful experience renting an apartment in West Village! I love the location, the amenities, and the high ceilings and character of the apartments. The staff - Katelyn and Cortney particularly - were phenomenal to work with. Highly professional, fun, and so responsive. It was a straightforward application and leasing process, and I felt supported every step of the way.
Melissa was friendly and helpful in getting us moved in extremely quickly from another state. We moved in sight-unseen and could not have done it without her.
Everyone at the West Village office is friendly, professional, and very helpful. They made my move-in a smooth process! Plus, what a great place to call home!
Friendly staff who helped to make my first move easy! Awesome location to Durham and for work in RTP. I'm excited to spend time here this summer!
We had a great experience working with west village to lease our first apartment after college!! They answered our numerous questions and were helpful through the whole process!
Great spot. Really enjoying my time there. Leasing office staff is always helpful and responsive. Pool, gym, dog area, restaurants in the complex are all great. Maintenance requests seem to be handled quickly. Minor downsides: due to the very urban setting, parking can sometimes be a pain. An open lot that is supposed to be reserved for residents often has lots of non-resident cars in it. Also, the apartment assist app that you can use to pay rent/utilities and log maintenance requests stinks. Other than those minor downsides, living here has been spectacular!
We will be moving into our apartment in July, so I can not speak to living in West Village yet, but our experience so far has been mostly positive. The team at the main office has been friendly and helpful every time I have had interactions with them. The only negative thing I can say is that they have been slow responding through email. While my emails are not quickly answered, the response through phone and in person have been wonderful. I am looking forward to moving in soon :)
The leasing team is great throughout the whole process and easy to contact with any questions that came up.The staff gets back to you incredibly quickly answering the questions which made the process a lot easier. Overall the staff is great all around.
