80 miles east of St. Louis, Mount Vernon looks like your typical small town. Main Street is lined with long-established buildings and businesses, but there’s a flourishing community atmosphere here.
There are quaint cottages and bungalows set among acres of land just outside the city center, with seven parks set within the town’s borders. Through April and October the town hosts Market Days, wherein an open-air market takes over the downtown area, offering crafts and more. The Cedarhurst Craft Fair is also a popular event, bringing the near 16,000 people of Mount Vernon out and about.
Developments have been slow and steady for this Illinois town, but new restaurants and businesses are opening every year. For those who still commute to work, I-57, I-64, and IL 15 will carry you anywhere you need to go.

Property Ratings at Westmont Apartments
The apartments are dated but that is reflected in the price. Maintenance does it’s best to accommodate but has its hands tied with management. For example my air conditioning unit stopped working and it took 3 attempts before it was fixed due to taking shortcuts. They even brought some large room unit to prop up in my bedroom as an”fix”. Management has also began renting to some undesirable people. At least 2 of the apartments in my building were rented to a large group of young men. Maybe 8 to an apartment. The appliances were bad. Dates maybe early 80’s. The carpets are never changed. When I lived in they appeared freshly shampooed but again in cutting corners they don’t have them professionally cleaned so shortly after moving in stains reappeared. They charge an extra $300 per fee specifically to have the carpets cleaned but then just use a cheap carpet shampooed and do them themselves. Not my best experience and I would hesitate to recommend living here.
Westmont apartments are kept up well and also offers a pool and onsite washer and dryers if you don't already have your own. The owner responds quickly to any issues and is a pet friendly environment. Complete with a large walking trail surrounding the apartments. Overall it is a nice & quiet place to live.
