It's where music, theater, bars, restaurants, and sports merge in Durham. The one-million-square-foot American Tobacco District is considered Durham's entertainment district, and it's all here -- restaurants, bars, the Durham Performing Arts Center, and the Durham Stadium, home of the Durham Bulls. The American Tobacco Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places -- the tobacco factory was first built in 1874. Today, the district contains 14 historic buildings. It is a trendy community that features its own events, like concerts and art shows.
American Tobacco is located downtown, directly north of the Durham Freeway and extending north to Pettigrew Street. The walkable district contains a variety of loft apartments in historic warehouses, along with office space to create a vibrant live-work-play community. Some local hotspots in the neighborhood include the Bull Durham Beer Company, Saladelia Café, and Basan Bull City Sushi.

Property Ratings at Whetstone
Starting with positives, the building was consistently clean, thanks to diligent cleaning staff, and I had no major issues with utilities like AC or plumbing during my 12-month stay. Maintenance handled minor issues promptly. Unfortunately, these aspects were among the few bright spots in an otherwise disappointing experience. If you're interested in a small, overpriced apartment with excessive fees in an unsafe area and unprofessional staff, this may be the place for you. It’s crucial to consider the area's safety before being swayed by the slightly lower price compared to nicer apartments in Durham. The surrounding area has questionable activity, especially near nearby low-income housing where residents pay about half of what Whetstone charges. I even saw a person waving a gun around a block from the complex. Soon after moving in, I was wrongly accused of a noise violation via a note on my door. I provided video evidence proving the noise came from another unit, but management responded with indifference and no apology. The fire alarm system was faulty, going off every time I used my oven, which maintenance confirmed had no fix. This constant disruption discouraged using the oven, as the alarms would inevitably disturb neighbors. The building frequently had an odor of marijuana in hallways, and trash was often left in common areas. Infrastructure issues were common: the elevators frequently needed maintenance, and the call box was broken for weeks, leaving me locked out multiple times. Management was the most infuriating aspect. Theft is frequent, with packages and cars stolen from the supposedly gated garage. When I reported my stolen package, management blamed me for not timing the delivery. When my car was stolen, they delayed confirming the situation, leaving me in limbo. Interactions with management, particularly Q, were consistently unpleasant. The worst instance occurred when she attempted to charge me over $1,000, falsely claiming I hadn’t provided the required 60-day notice, trying to make me pay for an extra month at a $1000/month higher rate. After consulting a lawyer, I had to escalate the issue to Greystar and her supervisors, who eventually resolved it in my favor. After moving out, I received a collections notice about unreturned equipment, which I’d left in the apartment, assuming management would handle it. Instead, they disposed of it, leaving me with a $232 bill.

We're glad to hear we delivered such a great experience. If there's anything further we can do for you, we are happy to help!
Great location, great price for the area. It is located a minute walk from the American tobacco campus and less than 5 minutes walk from all the restaurants and bars downtown. It is also next to the Durham bus terminal and the Amtrak which is great for travel and commuting to work. The apartment itself is nice. Plenty of storage and closet space for all my stuff. There is a pool which others seems to really enjoy. The gym does leave much to be desired though. But I'm only a 10 minute walk to the Y, which is not bad. Management is chill and they give great restaurant recommendations. Coffee and tea is free and the machine makes great cappuccinos and lattes. And sometimes there's free breakfast, which is also great. Maintenance is prompt and fixes issues on the same day that it's requested. The only thing that would make it better is if there was an affordable supermarket that was walking distance away (less than half mile)

If you want to pay $30/month to not have trash taken out daily, not have them recycle cardboard boxes, and not take more than one bag, then definitely move in here. Also, if you want to pay $80/month for the internet/cable package that sucks (internet cuts out/has poor speeds all around) when there’s fiber across the street, then I would also move in here. In summary, I’m overpaying for basic things at the Whetstone that don’t meet my basic needs. I’m looking at moving out.

Hi Emily, Thank you for taking the time to review Whetstone Apartments. If you are experiencing service issues with your internet, our immediate suggestion would be to contact Spectrum to ensure your equipment is not malfunctioning or in need of replacement. This is the first we are hearing of this concern and are happy to provide you with the contact information if you would like. As for competing communities, they may have had a different developer with additional hardware built in so that providers such as Google fiber could connect. Our building however was constructed with Spectrum’s partnership and does not have another provider’s hardware installed throughout. The recycling option you are looking for is unfortunately out of our hands. In 2020 the City of Durham removed our immediate area from the city provided recycling program, so there is nothing we can offer outside of the valet trash program to collect recyclables as the City also removed the original provided recycling containers. The bag limit placed outside in the corridor that was recently implemented is in response to the Wake and Durham County updated fire regulations, as the container you have been provided is fire resistant the Fire Marshall’s ruling of limiting flammable materials will not allow for additional bags or cardboard to be placed in the corridors outside of the fire-resistant containers. While we hate to hear you may not continue your journey with Whetstone into a second lease term, we are happy to hear your interactions with the on-site team have been positive, and we thank you for giving Whetstone the opportunity to be your community.
I've only lived here for about 2-3 weeks, but so far it's been great! I have a really nice view of the pool from my apartment. I love everything about my 1 bedroom apartment-- the lighting, the space, the countertops in the kitchen and bathroom, the big walk-in closet! The gym is small but it's perfect for your basic work out goals, especially if you do a lot of cardio like I do. The location is OPTIMAL! Everything fun is literally a 5 to 10 minute walk, which is great for a girls night out. Very happy with the move-in experience. The valet trash pick-up system has also been nice and luxurious (lol!).

It's a great location and the management is friendly. You will have their support in making your stay as comfortable as possible, and they will go out of their way to help you. The Durham bus station is right opposite the apartment so that is very convenient as well. Highly recommend the community as your residence.

It's a great community, super clean and close to the bus stop. Walking distance from some of the best eateries and spots in downtown Durham, including the American Tobacco Campus and 9th street, I would definitely recommend this community for stay. Houses are well ventilated and maintenance concerns are promptly addressed (trust me, this is a very big relief since you don't need to follow-up repeatedly). The coffee lounge is open 24*7 and has a welcoming vibe anytime you want to work there or sip on a cup of espresso to power through those long days and nights.

Very clean, safe a quiet. A great community, I feel at home here.
Can't say enough about the leasing office. Ben and Ana in particular have been so kind and helpful from the first day I contacted them with questions about leasing all the way through moving into my unit. Responses are prompt, service requests are dealt with in a timely manner and it feels as though the building genuinely cares about its residents' quality of life. Excited to call Whetstone home!

Thank you Whetstone for making my first time moving out on my own feel like home! The apartment complex is so cozy and inviting and I love all the amenities offered to the residents. It is in a great location with great proximity to everything downtown while maintaining very reasonable rent. I couldnt be happier with my decision to move to Whetstone!

Moving down to North Carolina for graduate school, I was nervous about finding a place that wasn't way out of my price range, yet was safe and nice enough to feel comfortable. Whetstone made that possible. Since the day I toured the apartment complex, I knew I wanted to live there. I've been here for a little over a month now and every day I am reassured that I made the right decision to live here.

For someone without a car, living at Whetstone has been wonderful. I can walk to get most things I need and explore downtown easily. My job has gone remote so I work from home. When I'm working and want a snack I can go downstairs in my building to get one from the little market. I'm glad they have healthy options. When I order things online, it's nice to have a safe place for them to be delivered to. At my old place the delivery people would have to leave them out in the open and sometimes they would refuse to do so because they felt it wasn't safe. I also enjoy all the little events Whetstone does for holidays and throughout the year, it made things feel less lonely in 2020. It was my first Christmas and Thanksgiving without friends and family.

We love living here at Whetstone! The staff, both administrative and maintenance, have always been there for us when we needed any help. Everyone is kind and welcoming, making us feel at home.
Moved here because it had everything I wanted in a living space. Love my space and view.. Kathleen is who assisted with my rental. Here is my experience thus far Pros: Location is downtown and many places to walk in the vicinity to eat. Easy access to Trails near by and I am close to my office. Pool, Gym, and parking. Like other apartments in area there are cable fees, valet trash, etc are in addition to the rent listed. It It still ends up being more affordable than similar apartments in area. Biggest thing for me is that the building is pretty well built in terms of noise. I do not ever here my neighbors pets, conversations, etc. On either side of me. They have us sign up slots to use amenities in alignment with the cities Phase of Durham which has allowed me to feel safe. I didnt have printer yet so Kathleen was gracious enough to print items I would email since Business center area was closed. Chris is also onsite to address and answer questions and concerns. There are singles, couples, and families here so it has been good living experience. When I email management I always get prompt response and if onsite ny issues are addressed. Cons:There is construction of new apt occurring across the street and can be loud and disruptive to residents working from home. Its set to be complete Fall 2020 though. All of downtown Durham you will see new buildings going up. We have gated entrance with key code and FOB needed to access building after certain hours. If not secured there has been occasions where I have seen and heard youth trespassing and using the pool. Management have sent out messages to residents about being mindful of closing gates/doors behind us. Depending on if you have someone living above you then you may here them working out and may feel disruptive.

The building is visually nice and sturdy built. Apartment has a nice amount of storage. Building is wheelchair accessible. You can dispose of trash and pickup mail without having to go outside the building. The location is close to public transportation and many restaurants/shops/entertainment venues so you don't have to have a car. The price is good compared to the other apartments nearby. The staff is friendly and helpful.
The whole process from pre-move in, moving in, and post move was made easy by Chris in the Whetstone leasing office. He is wonderful! I am really enjoying everything Whetstone has to offer along with the close proximity to the downtown. Great place to live!

Hi there, we are very happy to have provided you with such a positive experience! Thank you for the great review!
Great place to live. Clean as well. Maintenance is very responsive whenever an issue came up (which it barely did). Can get Starbucks coffee / tea whenever you want. Print center, Study area, etc. The counters inside the kitchen the design is sleek/clean as well. For those that like to work out/lift weights, it's a great place to work out. Very recommended place to be, especially if you're just moving in.
My time at Whetstone was some of the best I've experienced in apartment living when it comes to the staff and community! Everyone here was outstandingly friendly and out going. The pool and commons areas are great! They even got a squat rack in the gym after asking me for suggestions on gym improvements!!! Being able to walk everywhere downtown is also a major plus, and there is SO much to do in downtown Durham these days!
The ENTIRE management team has literally gone above and beyond to ensure all my requests have been addressed promptly. Nina and the entire management team have done and amazing job here and I commend them for their dedication to the residents. I feel it’s rare to find individuals who are truly passionate about what they do but this team thus far has shown me just that…they repeatedly impress me with the knowledge base and showing they take a valued interested in the residents. Just the simple thing as remember a residents apartment number and name goes a long way. These girls do just that, I have been here just over a month and have issued three service requests pretty early on and all of them were addressed within a 1-day turnaround (small things). Pool, lobby and guest facility is clean and kept up along with the hallways and garbage removal. Background: It should be noted; I am in Durham via a Leadership Rotation program for my job and will be stationed here for the next 8-months. This is the first time I have ever rented and Nina and the entire team made me feel very welcomed. Moving from Connecticut to North Carolina I was a little reluctant to say the least however, I feel I have adjusted nicely and am working to embrace my new environment. Recommendations: I’m still working to get myself out there, however the few things I have done thus far have been pretty awesome. I would recommend checking out the Durham farmers market which is held every Saturday in Durham Central Park about a 4 min drive from the apartment, so if you’re looking for fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables this is what I would recommend. Also Durham central park offers movies in the park every Saturday night which I attended and enjoyed (movie buff). Lots of local food vendors attend the movie night and really make the night special. I have been to two Durham Bulls games, lots of fun and about a two min walk from the apartment (great prices 15 dollar seats along 1st baseline) also they have fireworks on Saturday nights. Lastly I find myself frequenting Wholefoods which is about 5 min drive from the apartment (great selection) and warm staff. When it’s all said and done, Whetstone is a great apartment with an OUTSTANDING staff and I would recommend it to anyone interested in living in the heart of downtown Durham. Hope this helps. Good luck and thanks guys! -Daniel
Money definitely not worth it, terrible management
Nina and Riniqua are friendly and extremely helpful in answering questions and issues that come up.
Very happy with Whetstone - quick move in, awesome location, very helpful staff.
Great Location All Amenities Good Staff makes it a ideal place for urban dwellers. With Nina as Mgr. they seem to be doing a great job.
I had a great tour and leased on the spot, lucky me I came just in time for Wine Down Wednesday I met some of my new neighbors and got to see the staff really cater to the residents and have fun at the same time. I can't wait to move in; the location cancels out my commute in traffic, and my Starbucks is right down stairs. I love it!! Cheers, Simone
Whetstone used to be a great place to live, however it has gone down hill quickly. The current management is a nightmare to deal with. Simple maintenance issues take a long time to address, and when addressed are not fixed properly. For example, my air conditioning has been broken 3 times this summer and maintenance has been slow each time to address this issue and does not actually fix the problem as the air conditioning keeps breaking. Additionally, the air conditioning in the gym is entirely nonexistent (85 degree workouts are not fun). Picking up packages is also a problem, as the office is closed and locked for hours at a time during regular business hours. Sometimes, the office is locked while the management staff is inside and they refuse to open the door. Whetstone management also likes to surprise its residents with random new fees for services that no one wants. Overall, communication with management is a huge problem, and solving even routine problems remains a challenge.
I do NOT recommend moving into Whetstone Apartments. I really wish I could say I do, and I am honestly not one to write reviews... but I was SO DISAPPOINTED, that I had to save at least one person from the mistake of moving in. The apartment itself is decent (clean, safe, basic gym, nice pool, good location, free coffee that unfortunately isn't always stocked), but definitely not worth the cost. What really made me REGRET moving into Whetstone was the management. They have great customer service when you're looking to move in, however, once you are a tenant prepare to be disappointed. EVERY SINGLE PERSON I HAVE EVER TALKED TO WAS NOT PLEASED WITH WHETSTONE APARTMENTS... and that is saying something. My personal experiences: -Every single time that I have been told that I would be called back, I was not. Not once! -I was OVERCHARGED (ex: late fees) BY MISTAKE more than once! -When I emailed the manager about being overcharged, she did not respond. -I once waited literally ALL day to talk to the manager directly about a time sensitive issue (from at the very latest 11am until right before closing) ... by the time she got a moment to speak to me, it was to tell me that she would call me the following day. -I told management that I was thinking about breaking my lease and moving out and asked about the process. I was told that if I wanted to leave today I could as long as I pay 2 additional months of rent. When I was ready to move out, I went into the office to start the process and was then told that I would have to give 60 day notice or pay 4 months of rent… my prior notice didn’t count because I didn’t put it in writing. -With the concerns I've already listed above, you can only imagine how long repairs take. You live and you learn, however for the cost of this apartment you better well be getting good customer service (if not great). And at Whetstone you honestly get the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE imaginable.
Good: Whetstone is a great apartment community. It has a convenient downtown location, and great parking. The amenities include a small office, printing room, lounge with multiple televisions, and fitness facility. Bad: Apartments are a bit small, and elevator locations are not convenient.
Very nice, new apartments in the heart of Durham. Almost everything worth going to is located a just a walk away which was the biggest draw for my fiance and I moving here. Admittedly the walls are a little thin, and you can particularly hear people in the hall which I found odd. Overall noise isn't too bad though as it seems mostly young professionals live here. The staff are excellent and friendly, and surprisingly remember you and will say hi anytime you're by the office. I would rate five stars just the noise can be a little much at times.
