Famous for its ties to American history, Alexandria today remains a popular city — not just for tourists but also for those who work for the government. Located southwest of Washington, D.C., the west end Alexandria neighborhood of Landmark/Van Dorn has become a culturally diverse place for commuters to live.
Landmark/Van Dorn sits 5 miles due west of the downtown Alexandria waterfront, making a walk along the Potomac River only 15 minutes away. With the neighborhood outside of Old Towne, the close Metro line makes going downtown simple, yet residents can enjoy their local parks and restaurants without the influx of tourists.
Known for its luxury car dealerships, high-end rentals in Cameron Station, parks and diverse grocery stores, Van Dorn benefits from being a part of a community that, with over 900 acres of protected open space and a commitment to be biker and pedestrian friendly, makes Alexandria well worth the investment to live in.

Property Ratings at Whitestone at Landmark
RATS RATS RATS!!!! If you constantly want to hear rat noises anytime of the day, you are welcome to stay at Whitestone. Nothing has been done in my apartment other than putting 2 mice traps when there is a wide infestation of rats all over the building and the management does absolutely NOTHING. Water can be cut without notice, you might not have hot water when you need it. I cannot wait for my lease to be over so I can get out of here and find a sanitary place to live. Also to note, I live in the upper floors still rats are everywhere. Look for somewhere cleaner and well maintained not worth the location or the rent prices.

First off, RATS! They have RATS! They'll claim it's a "citywide infestation," but in reality, they're too lazy to take real action. There are several tiny gaps in the building that allow rodents to enter. Although I haven't personally experienced it, I've heard that rats are living in the walls and can be heard in your apartment. I spent a year living here, and it was a horrible experience. My initial complaint was that, while I hadn't moved in yet, I discovered when I went to my apartment that no cleaning had been done. There was no shower head or no balcony shades either. Still, nothing was done to my apartment on the day I moved in. It was still really not prepared. I was unaware that a thorough inspection had not been done. It was a terrible first few months of living here. Not one, but two rats happened to me. In my one-bedroom apartment, there were multiple wall gaps that required me to submit maintenance requests in order to fix. The management is slow to react to problems and has no idea how to solve them. Give their office a call. They make it hard to get someone on the phone, and you have to keep calling. They did help eventually when I had my rat problems, but they took their time and acted incompetent on how to solve anything. It took persistent nagging to get them to finally send an exterminator out. The whole apartment stinks! The first floor always spelled like something died and every day was a new smell. The whole upkeep of this building is horrible. There's always trash on the table in the lobby, the trash area was always an overflowing mess that included a community of rats, there were ceiling leaks, frequent elevator issues, stained lobby/hallway carpets, dog poop everywhere outside and pee in the elevators, packages being left everywhere, and there was a point in time where we had no entryway door. Your money is not worth it for this place. KEEP LOOKING!! Save up for a better place, please! If you're reading this, trust me and the other negative reviews—they're all true!!

Dysfunctional, poor communication, staff has lack of care for their tenants, elevators don’t work , AC doesn’t work, water and electricity gets cut off time to time. Packages gets stolen, utilities are expensive because they accumulate the bill for the entire building, not just your unit. they will take your money for every little detail when you move out. Take pictures! This place is terrible Save your money, time and stress from this atrocious place

I’ve lived here since July and I have to say I absolutely love it here and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else in the DMV. The rent for my studio is one of the cheapest prices in the area and I have my very own 2 in 1 washer dryer in unit (Which was BRAND NEW when I moved in), dishwasher, pool view balcony, and hardwood floors. The gym is really nice for an apartment gym and was recently expanded. In the short time I’ve lived here the carpets have been replaced and doors have been repainted. It’s obvious to me management cares a lot about the upkeep of the building and the staff downstairs are super friendly and have asked me several times how I have liked living here. The location is prime and has several restaurants and shops in walking distance. I’ve submitted 2 maintenance requests since I’ve been here, both of which were handled either the same day or the next day and resolved in less than 30 minutes. Really the only downside is the elevators which don’t work well and are slow but since I live on the 4th floor, I always take the stairs.

The apartments are filled with mice and rats. I went outside the other day and there were 4-5 just sitting by the door. AND THEY’RE NOT AFRAID OF YOU!!! Sometimes the elevators work, sometimes they don’t. But the bottom line is, you’ll be waiting at least 5 mins to get on one. AC units kept going out and just found out that they don’t keep AC in the winter. Yea, so even if it 70 degrees outside, if you’re on the 4th floor and up, it’s at least 80 degrees in your apartment. But they don’t care. They’ll tell you to buy a personal fan. Last night I had every window and patio door open plus my $300 Dyson fan on, and it was literally 87 degrees in my apartment. Literally just circulating heat at that point. And we can’t keep our bedroom door open because like I said there’s mice. So in all I’m screwed with my lease but learn from my mistakes! I really wish I had a corporate number to complain, because it’s really out of the leasing office hands. They really don’t care. On a good note, our packaging system works well and is well organized.

First time moving in an apartment and my experience thus far has been awful! I’ve only been living here about three months and have had four mice. We have had maintenance come out each time to put down traps ( caught 3) but there’s clearly a pest problem that needs to be fixed. The elevators are terrible. Sometimes you wait 15 mins for an elevator. (Which is especially annoying for the elders that live here). My second week living here, my package got stolen. I went to the office to let them know and they never followed up with me. On a good note, Angel, in the leasing office is AMAZING! Only dealt with him a few times but he’s the person to go to if you have any small issues.

In a nutshell, Whitestone is a great apartment complex at affordable rates within the beltway and truly caring customer service from the front office albeit with a minor problem with the elevators; I'd strongly recommend considering this as a place to live if you work in DC or NOVA; the prices are hard to beat for the quality of the living spaces and location (both general and immediate). Not only is it close to the District, but it's also in walking distance of a grocery store and multiple restaurants. For those who want more background, I lived here for nearly five years in a couple of different apartments (upgrading from a studio to a one-bedroom partway through my time here). The complex has always been good, but has definitely improved over the past several years. You can tell that the management company cares about the building and its tenants; there have been numerous improvement projects to invest money back into the complex like re-paving/painting the parking lot, remodeling the apartment gym, and installing/maintaining the garden at the front of the building. It really shows that the management cares about the tenants. The apartments themselves are nice, very well-priced for their size, and furnished with up-to-date appliances. The front office was always very friendly and easy to work with, and always responsive when we needed to reach out to them. The office manager, Ryan, has gone above and beyond on numerous occasions and has done a great job with the building and his team, especially through the COVID situation. In response to COVID, the office put up posters encouraging best-practices to mitigate the spread of COVID, limited the elevator capacity, and encouraged using digital means to conduct business where possible. It was really encouraging to see the office be so proactive about keeping us all safe and healthy. The neighbors are also really kind. Most people keep to themselves but almost always greet each other with a smile and a "hello", it's a nice friendly vibe without feeling like you have to keep up with the neighbors. But, there's at least one opportunity for growth. As noted in some of the other reviews, the elevators can be frustrating to deal with if you're in a hurry. Sometimes one of the elevators seems to go out of order, so the building is reduced to one elevator, so if you're on a high floor you can be waiting for it for about five minutes or more. Hardly the biggest problem, but still worth addressing.

We have lived here nearly a year. They have raised our rent by 14% and you can still smell the marijuana smoke. Office employees are decent enough but personalities don't make up for the overpriced rent. There are far better options out there, I recommend perusing them.

Over the past three years leasing with Whitestone, I have stayed in two different apartments - the first being a one bedroom and the second lease being a two bedroom. The management team has always been responsive and helpful whenever I have a question concerning my lease or transferring units; the maintenance team has also been great whenever there is an issue that I cannot solve myself. Location is great! Very close to 395, Van Dorn Metro, BJ's, Safeway, Giant, and Starbucks. Furthermore, they have also done nice upgrades to the landscaping of the property that has really set the bar when compared to the other properties on Whiting St. For dog owners, there is a massive dog park on the property that is solely for Whitestone residents (which is really nice if you are uneasy about going to the major dog parks in the area that are likely over crowded). Rent is reasonable; to the previous review, we live in Northern Virginia right next to Washington D.C.....did you expect anything different concerning rent? My only gripe is that one of the elevators goes out frequently; I have talked to management about this issue and they tell me they are actively working on it. This at least gives me the chance to get some extra steps and take the stairs!

Great place to live especially if being in Alexandria is important to you. With Safeway and BJ’s right up the street and plenty of eateries close by, there’s not much to complain about. I also love that they do little things in the leasing office to get residents acquainted! Bottom line: Great place to live for a great price since it’s Alexandria. Maintenance is pretty fast at addressing maintenance request as well. I’m completely satisfied!

Thank you for this stellar review of Whitestone at Landmark! We hope you'll be happy here for a long time.
This is the perfect location if you want quick access to the highway, shops and medical buildings. There is a great workout room and a very nice pool. The apartments are very spacious with lots of closet space. Some of them have been updated with the latest appliances. This is a great place to call home after a hard days work. Office personnel and maintenance are very friendly and work to resolve any issue that comes up.
I've lived here for 4+ years and it's come under new management within the last year. Despite making some efforts to renovate, the new management (Klingbeil Property Management) simply are not competent. They fail to communicate information to residents and have never sent out an email about anything. The garbage chute is constantly clogged and the availability of recycling containers is inconsistent (and often in violation of city law). Most recently they've been unable to turn on the air conditioning despite the temperature being at or above 85 degrees for the past week. Look elsewhere if you can afford it.
I moved to the DC metro area from 2500 miles across country. My family had a difficult time adjusting and finding a place that felt like home. We moved to Whitestone Landmark (klingsbeil) about 2 months ago. The building had just come under new management and I had heard from other tennants how terrible the new management was. I HAVE TO DISAGREE. These people have been absolutely amazing to my family they bent over backwards to get us into a large top floor apartment for the best price possible. They have always handled any maintenance issues within minutes of calling and are so very friendly they truly make Whitestone landmark feel like our home. It was very tough to move to a big city away from everything I ever knew and these folks most definitely have shown our family how property managers should treat you If you pay your rent and you respect them they will do everything in there power to make you happy! I highly recomend them and I will never rent from another company. The apartments are beautiful. Maintenance staff is top notch! and the housekeepers are ever so friendly and they keep the place looking great.
