I lived there for about three years. The apartment complex is OK if that's what you can afford. But the area and the complexes around it have gotten really sketchy. (Such as two double homicides across the street at Westminster in about six months. And suspicious people wandering through the complex. My next-door neighbors had their door kicked in and items stolen -- it was done by someone they knew who hung out there on the regular and decided to rob them.) Also, you can hear the neighbors. A lot. And smell their weed when they smoke inside and cigarettes when they smoke on the porch. (The windows leaked when it rained hard and I'd get random wasps flying through my apartment when I hadn't been out in a couple of days.) My heat broke two of the three winters when it was the coldest and it took days and multiple visits for them to fix. Then my AC would be broke when the heat showed up, so more visits. I mean, it got fixed, it was just super annoying to have to suffer so many times and to be finding bits of wire all over my bathroom afterward. (It seems like this complex might be at that age where appliances and such are just going to fail because of age -- I had to have my dishwasher replaced and I imagine the fridge isn't far behind. At least everything was fixed.) Parking is terrible, I ended up paying an extra $20 a month for a carport that wasn't even that close to my apartment, but I work second, so it was better to do that than park on the street or walk for blocks in that neighborhood. And then, I'd have to get people towed out of my spot; one week it was three nights in a row. I never used the on-site laundry because it required a special card you had to load in the office with cash, but it either never worked or ate my money the few times I attempted it. (I recommend Liberty on South Sheridan. It's not close but you can use your debit/credit card instead of digging up quarters and it's super clean.) Current turnover in the office seems to be a mess. They fired two people in early summer before I moved out, and I had to go into get a mismailed package and there was already a new set of people working in there two months later. Also, they charged me a bit over my deposit for move out, which I completely expected and deserved. I mailed the check back about two days after I got the letter. They sat on the check for two months, cashed it, then sent me to a collection agency for it. So I am starting to fight back about that.
Not a bad complex, easily affordable if your on your own, the maintenance guys are really helpful and quick to get the job done. As far as management goes, I'd say the ladies are doing a fine job, they are extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Some of the friendliest I've meet. As far as downsides go I can't really think of any besides a few odd and ends but you will find that any wear. Long story short nice complex, good maintenance and great management.
If you don't have the availability for a roommate and need to find an affordable one bedroom, this is a great place to start. The complex is older, but the maintenance staff is quick to fill work orders on anything that needs to be repaired. Some of the units come with a fireplace, and the outdoor pool is pretty nice and well-maintained. The walls are paper thin, though, so noise and smells both easily penetrate them. The management doesn't enforce the quiet hours that are apparently supposed to begin at 10 PM. I will definitely relocate when my lease is up, but it is going to be fine for the term of my lease to live here. I do have easy access to most great areas of the city.
Our place there; apt 9-11 burnt down then flooded in one wknd while we were out of town but they saved all our stuff and took care of us. Best place ever
