Property Ratings at Winwood Apartments
Love the location, trails, privacy, and amenities! We used the clubhouse for large family gathering and it was perfect.
Pros: I love the layout of my apartment. Close to various essential stores. Maintenance is quick to respond to requests. Office & Fitness center are super convenient. The apartment amenities are all great to have. Usually a quiet area. Cons: They do not enforce the no-smoking policy. I've had neighbors that have smoked pot since day one and no complaints have made a difference. Wake up to a skunk smell and come home from work to the same disgusting odor. Scheduled maintenance is not always announced. Just a minor inconvenience when you work 3rd shift and they show up unannounced. The apartment was not completed when I moved in. I was not compensated or given a discount on rent for the multiple months I had issues with the washer & dryer, old windows, old stovetop, etc. Construction was also an issue for months, but they seemed to have completed most of the work before the winter season. Overall a decent place to live. (Current resident of 9 months)
My daughter with disabilities has lived at Winwood Apartments now for almost 11 years. It’s an awesome and safe place to live. The office management, maintenance team and the entire community is exceptional!
Winwood has been our home for the last 4 years. Totally safe and close to everything. Great walking trails and very pet friendly. Truly a place I enjoy calling home.
I have lived here for a few years now and have nothing bad to say. Staff is always great if I have any issues at all they are on it! Maintenance is very prompt and always friendly. Love living here!
Winwood is located in a great neighborhood and is surrounded by lots of natural beauty, but for the foreseeable future, it's morphed into a construction site. The owners are in the process of renovating apartments and building a new leasing office. Tenants on the south side of the property are being displaced during the pandemic to facilitate the work. I imagine north-side residents will be in for the same inconvenience within another year or so. Even if you move into a newly renovated apartment, be warned that you may have to put up with the noise of sawing, drilling, and hammering in a neighboring one during the week and on Saturdays too. Sometimes the work starts before 8 am, violating the quiet hours in the lease. Also, these "renovated" units may still contain appliances -like the AC and furnace - that date back to the mid-80s. Given that Winwood's prices are equal to or more than that of a newer properties in the area, I suggest giving them a miss, at least until the dust settles.

Love my apartment. Nice quiet location, grounds are well kept. Staff is friendly and quick to respond to requests. Neighborhood is friendly with everything you need close. I looked a long time before deciding on Winwood and am glad I did. If you are looking to move to this area you should definitely give these apartments a look.

I I lived there for four years and moved out last month and I got a big bill, they are very helpful while living there. Good place to live, nice neighborhood, good trails and very safe. So all and all good as far as environment, maintenance staff is awesome. Office staff is good until they know you are leaving :) When you leave, take a video of whole apartment otherwise you will get lot of charges. Even then good place

Thank you so much for your feedback! We appreciate you choosing to live at Winwood Apartments. I’m sorry to hear you had such a frustrating experience moving out, but I really appreciate you bringing this issue to our attention.
Hands down the BEST place to rent in the greater Des Moines area. Yes, they are an older complex but the greenbelt views, the walk ways, 2 pools, pet friendly and a WONDERFUL staff - just can't be beat! They have private entrances which is wonderful - you don't have to walk thru a stinky hallway. There are typically only 1 or 2 'shared' walls so you have a very quiet, private dwelling. It is VERY un-apartment like and very much like a townhouse. For the area, I feel the prices are excellent as well. The maintenance does a really excellent job at responding to requests, even to OCD people like myself. They are patient and kind and Jackie and Ruth are top notch. They have handled my constant questions and requests with the grace of the gods and have never once been rude or condescending. I feel like a valued member of the Winwood family - as seriously cheesy as that sounds. (I'm a serious introvert, so for me to say that is huge....and in no way disingenuous.) I have lived here 2 separate times and am on my 3rd apartment here. With the ability to live anywhere in the metro, I still chose Winwood for the amenities and the beautiful location. You may not get a brand spanking, shiny-new apartment but trust me, it is worth it! Neighborhood-wise - we are in the heart of Johnston. A very clean, quite and SAFE neighborhood. The grocery store is a block away and the interstate less than 5 minutes away.
This well maintained complex has swimming pools, an exercise room, and biking/walking trails. The pet friendly apartments have balconies, patios and many have screened porches, fireplaces and vaulted ceilings! Close by is a post office, grocery store, restaurants, and schools. Office and maintenance staff are very friendly and helpful.
I noticed when talking to the staff at Winwood Apts. was how friendly and approachable they all were. The maintenance staff is timely and friendly. They are quick and very skilled. In the winter I have never seen a better staff at snow removal. Their first priority when it snows is safety. The second would be making sure the residents can get where they need to go by removing the snow quickly. There are quite a few trails for enjoying the outdoors with yourself, a pet, or partner. Overall this is the best managed community I have ever seen and would recommend them to anyone.
Tucked away among a swarm of trees are the future apartment homes of many. The apartments are fashioned after small homes that welcome you the minute you walk in the door. It is easy to forget these are apartments and not single family dwellings. Fireplaces are in some to snuggle up in front of on those cold and stormy nights of winter. To give it the feeling of living in the woods are deer to watch romping from the patio. Birds are abundant to sing lullaby's day and night. If bird watching is your thing, watching birds build their nests in the rafters and drain spouts are fascinating to watch. Watch closely in early evening or after dark and opossums and racoons will jaunt across the yard. Geese and ducks fly in from time to time to give a quick hello before they leave on their way. Watching squirrels chase each other around and around and up in the trees is a delight. Ground squirrels or aka Grinnies can give a slight fright when they seem to appear from no where and run across the patio. They are harmless but love to burrow down between the patio cement slab and the building. So when they go home they run across the patio giving one a slight start not realizing they are approaching. When maintenance is needed, it seems like maintenance is standing outside the door waiting for a call. They respond usually in a few hours or less and the issue is resolved quickly. The grounds are kept immaculate! If peace of mind, and a relaxing home atmosphere is what you seek, it is found in these apartments.
I have only lived here for a little bit, but I can tell this is one of the best companies I will ever rent from. The application process was easy and speedy. Deposit was affordable and it is a pet friendly community. Apartment was very clean when I moved in. They host community events. There was a cook out the first day I was here. When I put in a maintenance request because of a noisy air conditioner, they were able to fix it on the same day.
I had requested a tour via www.Apartments.com and after 2 attempts, called in to setup a tour. I received a call about an hour before my scheduled tour and was told the unit I requested would be unavailable, but would be able to tour another unit. I agreed because I was very interested in the property. The apartment complex was very clean, easy to navigate, and very well maintained. The main appeal was that it was a pet friendly place with no weight limits. The representative was very friendly, outgoing, and willing to answer my questions and make every accommodation possible. After thinking about it, I realized that after rent alone for a studio, additional pet rent, and everything else, I would be unable to afford it. If the rent would be a little more reasonable, especially for a studio, I would have signed the lease right there that moment.
The rental office is awesome and very friendly. The apartments are well kept.In walking distance to stores and the post office. Everything you need in one rental package. An awesome renting experience for new comers to Iowa.
