Known as the historic home of Wyoming’s first state penitentiary, Rawlins has come a long way from its historic roots. Now listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, nearly 15,000 visitors tour the now Wyoming Frontier Prison Museum every year. Rawlins is also home to the Carbon County Museum. Though Rawlins had a gritty past, it’s a charming small town today filled with small businesses and affordable apartments and houses for rent.
The Rawlins Municipal Airport and the Rochelle Ranch Golf Course sit on the eastern end of town. Though Rawlins is mainly residential, there are a few local restaurants and businesses in the heart of the city. Residents of Rawlins have easy access to Seminoe State Park and Interstate 80. Locals especially appreciate the hiking trails, campgrounds, fishing lakes, and waterfalls at Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest.
