50 West

186 Units 64 Stories Built in 2017 386,869 Sq Ft

When 50 West Street was unveiled in 2015, the 64-story tower was much-discussed for its extensive use of curved glass that rounds the building. Designed by architect Helmut Jahn, the building boasts 3,000 panels of glass, 500 of which curve to deliver expansive views of Lower Manhattan, the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty. As Daniele Petroni, 50 West Street’s project manager, told the New York Times in 2015, “Looking through this glass, your perspective instantly widens. It’s magical.” Inside 50 West, that magical quality comes courtesy of the floor-to-ceiling windows that line the residences, allowing in water views and generous natural light. While the Financial District skyscraper has commanded attention for its views, the building doesn’t skimp on amenities — a captivating outdoor deck with binocular viewers crowns the roof, a wellness spa delivers treatments, and private spaces, including a library and dining room, are plentiful. The building also hosts another unique element — the Francis J. Greenburger art collection. Inside the building’s simple modern lobby, a swirling white tornado sculpture by Alice Aycock and a pastel-colored acrylic diptych by Gunnar Theel greet residents and visitors, with dozens of other artworks on display throughout the building. The building’s 186 units include one to four-bedrooms as well as more spacious penthouses. Danish designer Thomas Juul-Hansen, who also worked on High Line 23 and The Beekman residences handled the interior design. Chef’s kitchens are outfitted with Miele appliances and accompanied by granite countertops and walnut cabinetry. Bathrooms with bidets and heated floors as well as vented in-unit washer/dryers add functional luxury. A two-bedroom with a foyer and generous living room space starts at around $3 million. A three-bedroom with an open floor plan and space for a home office can cost $4.2 million. A magnificent sprawling penthouse occupying an entire floor with over 7,000 square feet of space, steam room, sauna and private elevator has sold for $29.5 million. While 50 West emphasizes its views, it also delivers numerous amenities focused on top-notch service. A round-the-clock concierge attends the lobby and an in-building gym includes options to book private indoor cycling or yoga classes. A wellness spa offers treatment rooms and a sauna. Residents can use the 60-foot heated indoor pool for swimming or take advantage of opportunities for water aerobics and water polo. A golf simulator room and children’s playroom, as well as a lounge with billiards and ping pong tables keep entertainment options close. The real highlight may be the outdoor patio, which offers striking views that include the Statue of Liberty, and areas for grilling and entertaining. For those with cars, parking can be available in the building next door, connected by a lighted walkway. The location of 50 West, just south of Rector Street, puts all of FiDi and Battery Park within easy reach. Access to the pedestrian bridge to cross to the west side is directly overhead, outside the building. The shopping convenience of Brookfield Place is less than a 10-minute walk north, and a wide variety of bars and restaurants, including Clinton Hall and St. George, can be found within a short stroll. For groceries, Whole Foods is a six-minute walk away on Rector Street. The expansive Battery Park is a 10-minute walk south, offering views of the East and Hudson Rivers and room to jog or cycle. The Stock Exchange is little more than three blocks directly east and surrounded by subway options for commuters. The 1 and R and W trains stop at Rector Street, with the 4 and 5 trains available at Wall Street, just four blocks away.

Neighborhood

The Financial District sits at the tip of Lower Manhattan. It is the oldest part of New York City – the city was created here in 1624. Known as the world’s center of finance, the district is home to the largest stock exchange in the world, the New York Stock Exchange. Sometimes referred to as FiDi, the district contains a variety of high-end restaurants and bars along Wall Street, popular hangouts for those working at the exchange.

Many landmarks are in the Financial District, including One World Trade Center, The National 9/11 Memorial and Museum, the Ellis Island National Immigration Museum, the Castle Clinton National Monument, and Battery Park. National Historic Sites include St. Paul’s Chapel, founded in 1766 and visited by George Washington after his inauguration in 1789. Stone Street, one of New York’s oldest streets, is a historic district, first paved in 1658.

Because so much is happening in the Financial District, it is packed with residents, workers, and tourists.
