A former mayor once dubbed Bellingham the “City of Subdued Excitement,” an oddly perfect nickname for this delightful and unique community. Ninety minutes north of Seattle on Interstate 5, Bellingham is a charming small city positioned about twenty miles from the Canadian border. Western Washington University enrolls around 16,000 students, many of whom chose to live in the coastal Sehome area near campus.
Locals are quite enthusiastic about beer, books, and bicycles, and you’ll spot many businesses around town specializing in any and all of those Pacific Northwest staples. Bellingham hosts numerous community events throughout the year, covering everything from music to athletics; perhaps the most unique is the annual Ski to Sea race, a seven-leg relay in which teams compete to get from Mount Baker Ski Area to Bellingham Bay via skis, bikes, boats, and by foot.

Property Ratings at BARKLEY APARTMENTS
I was told my unit would have a clean carpet upon move-in. When I moved in there was animal hair and food in the carpet obviously have not been cleaned. How in the world does that happen?
Property Manager at BARKLEY APARTMENTS, Responded To This Review
Hi Basking, we are sorry to see this review for Barkley. We want to clarify that we personally perform walk-through move-in inspections with each resident when they get their keys, and we weren't made aware of any unsanitary conditions during the walk-through or afterward. We have the carpets professionally cleaned if not replaced, and have a professional cleaning service go through every apartment prior to move in. We believe this review may be for the wrong community. However, we still invite you to contact us at 360-647-2818 to lean more about our community, thank you.
Friendly staff but there is constant dumpster divers, at least two homeless camps in the forest and multiple break ins. Other then that the maintenance workers at on top of things
Maintenance and the office staff are very responsive.
We lived here for a year. The staff in office and maintenance always so helpful and nice! They responded really quickly to questions and resolved any issues (just few minor things) really quickly.
Beware, of being seduced into thinking these are well built apartments. Management will tell you that they are only 12 years old, so you might think that the noise level between upper and lower apartments isn't going to be so annoying that you have to have some sort of white noise on all the time for peace. It is annoying, and in general will sound like an elephant is above you. If you have noisy neighbors below you that fight or argue, you will hear it even through the carpeting and floor. The refrigerator/freezers are terrible. Very small freezer space and if you fill it, you will have problems. Your lease is going to be very long, over 10 pages, and there are many unfair conditions (almost criminal). When the time comes to move out, you will have management bringing "god knows who" into your apartment up to 20 days before you leave with only 24 hour notice, whether you are there or not. If you don't want to be in buildings with pets (thus fleas), they will tell you that there is another building that doesn't allow pets. You might want to rent there: beware they don't tell you that they allow any person who claims a disability to have a pet in that building, so there could still be fleas. They say no smoking is allowed in or near apartments, but they allow smoking on the property, so if smoke bothers you don't plan on having your non-air conditioned apartment windows open during hot summer. After your lease is over if you want to stay on month to month your rent could go up by almost $200/month. They want to move people in and out, thereby making a profit off non-refundable deposits.
The apartment is clean and in good shape. It is in a noisey and busy part of town but it is ok. The stores are pretty close and there is a trail near by. It feels safe and is a good place to start out and find your adventure.
My husband and I were greeted very nicely, We were sad to find out that there was no vacancies until later and it would be a 2 bed on 2 floor, and I'm disabled.
Love the location and friendly staff, would recommend to anyone.
