Is your property on Instagram? Make sure you’re getting the most out of Instagram reels.
These short video clips appear at the top of users’ feeds and are the perfect way to expand your following and build brand awareness. Designed to be shown to people who aren’t already following you, they’re easy to share to Facebook, too, so you can get extra mileage out of your content. When done well, an Instagram reel will show up on the Reels and Explore pages of users who have interest related to your content.
A whopping 2 billion people engage with reels every month, so don’t miss out! Try these seven tips from Apartments.com’s social media expert Erica Byrum to make sure your Instagram reels have the most impact.
Keep them short and sweet
No need for long videos — top-performing reels are usually between seven and nine seconds. Just set your timer for the length you want before you start recording.
Use fun transitions and effects
If you’re combining multiple clips into a single reel, select from Instagram’s transition effects to keep it engaging. Before you film the clip with a transition, just hit the sparkle icon above the record button. Effects like the clapping transition and side swipe transition go a long way in keeping your viewers entertained and engaged.
Nail the hook
Don’t keep your viewers in the dark! Introduce your topic in the first few seconds so they know what your reel is about.
Don’t forget about background music
Keep your reel engaging with trending music. Not only do trending songs capture people’s attention, but they also increase your reach, based on Instagram’s algorithms. Not sure what’s trending? When you’re browsing other reels, just look for an arrow by the name of the song — this indicates it’s trending. Or, when you create a reel, check out audio suggestions from Instagram, which will serve up trending options.
Use disappearing text overlays
To make your reel more dynamic, highlight specific words or phrases with pop-up text. Just keep it short. Limit your text boxes to two to three words.
Stay on top of trends
If a specific meme keeps popping up in your feed, hop on the trend and give it your own spin. Use this as an opportunity to highlight the personality of your local community.
Be consistent
Follow a regular schedule to maintain engagement with your followers. There’s no magic number, but consistency helps you keep and grow your followers.
