ThanksGifting 2023: Meet 4 Charities Doing Good in the Multifamily Industry

Every November, Apartments.com honors our partners in the multifamily industry through our ThanksGifting campaign. The annual campaign, which is in its fourth year, has now expanded to Canada.

This year, we’re recognizing four nonprofits across the U.S. and Canada for their charitable work fighting homelessness, preventing hunger, and helping disaster victims recover.

Meet the recipients

The four organizations, which each received a $10,000 donation, rely on partnerships with the multifamily industry to serve underserved populations. Here’s a closer look at what they do.

Entryway: Creating housing and career opportunities in multifamily

Entryway combats homelessness by offering at-risk individuals a path to housing and multifamily careers. Creating opportunities for economic self-sufficiency for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, the Virginia-based nonprofit provides career training, full-time employment, and housing opportunities within the real estate industry.

Previously known as Shelters to Shutters, Entryway is one of the few organizations that pairs housing with job opportunities. The nonprofit provides a bridge between vulnerable individuals, social service organizations, and the multifamily industry, said CEO David Williams in an interview with Apartments.com senior vice president Marcia Bollinger.

“It's hard to get a job if you don't have an address,” he said. “It’s hard to get an address if you don't have a job. Having employment and a stable shelter is something that’s needed at the same time.”

Move for Hunger: Fighting hunger and food waste

When residents move out of their apartments, what happens to the food left behind in their pantries? These items are often discarded — a problem that Move for Hunger is trying to solve.

By helping people donate their unopened food products when they move, the New Jersey–based nonprofit has delivered 37 million pounds of pantry items to food banks across North America since 2009.

“One in eight kids in this country go to bed not knowing where their next meal is coming from,” said Adam Lowy, founder and executive director of Move for Hunger, in his conversation with Marcia. “And at the same time 38 percent of food produced in this country ends up in landfills.”

Tackling both these problems, Move for Hunger works with apartment communities and moving companies to simultaneously fight hunger and prevent food waste.

Hatching Hope: Giving disaster victims a way forward

After losing their family home in a fire, Keli Lynch-Wright and her son founded Hatching Hope. The Alabama-based nonprofit organization partners with the multifamily industry to serve residents displaced by hurricanes, floods, and other disasters, providing immediate and long-term recovery essentials to disaster victims.

“We take care of our multifamily friends first,” Keli said in an interview with Marcia, “and then we enable our multifamily friends to help their city at large, their community, their churches, their schools, the daycares, the businesses that surround their community and make their community a great place to call home.”

Hatching Hope is putting the $10,000 donation toward a new disaster response vehicle to deliver essential supplies.

Food Banks Canada: Relieving hunger across Canada

Following Apartments.com’s recent expansion to Canada, ThanksGifting has also crossed the border. The fourth recipient of this year’s donations is Food Banks Canada, an organization focused on relieving and preventing hunger.

The national charitable organization supports an extensive network of organizations fighting hunger across every province and territory in Canada.

“This generous gift will provide 20,000 meals to people in Canada facing food insecurity, bringing us one step closer to our vision of a Canada where no one goes hungry,” said Sara Douglas, manager of development and partnerships, in a conversation with Marcia.

Giving back to the community

From the United States to Canada, Apartments.com is committed to giving back and highlighting the important work of our multifamily partners.

“We want to make sure that we’re helping along the way in the multifamily business,” Marcia said. “From all of us at Apartments.com, happy ThanksGifting!”
