When one year draws to a close and a new one peeks over the horizon, we’re inspired to set New Year’s resolutions with the hope that a fresh, new year will bring with it a new beginning. If thinking about fresh starts and new beginnings (and, well, horizons) has motivated you to be more eco-conscious in the new year, here are some ways you can go green in the office.
Ditch the plastic
According to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), 85 percent of single-use plastics, like water bottles, ends up in landfills. Instead of buying a bottle of water when you’re thirsty, invest in a reusable water bottle and fill it up at the office water cooler. You’ll save money and help protect the environment.
Pass on paper
Are you a coffee or tea drinker? Rather than using a disposable paper or Styrofoam cup, purchase a reusable coffee mug and keep it at your desk.
Print only what you need
Have you ever walked over to the printer and found stacks of paper your office mates printed but never picked up? It’s a common occurrence in many offices. Before hitting print, ask yourself if you really need a hard copy of that document or email. If you do need to print, try using the double-sided print feature to reduce waste.
Recycle
Do you have a recycling program at your apartment community? Ask to set up a recycling station in your office where you and your team can recycle things like paper, plastic, and cardboard.
Switch it off
When you're headed to a meeting, put your computer in sleep mode. After the meeting, make sure you turn off the light in the conference room. When you’re getting ready to leave for the day, switch off your computer.
While these changes are simple and easy, they’ll make a big difference toward reducing your carbon footprint. Here’s to a happy (greener) New Year!
